On the face of it, a five-pound rise for Bearish’s win on handicap debut last time out seems a little harsh, considering he won by just a neck. He may still have a bit in hand, though, considering the second won next time out and the third placed in the John Smith’s Cup on his next run. There could still be plenty of improvement to come, with just four career runs to his name and Oisin Murphy taking over in the saddle.

Tip 2 - 3:00 York - Adaay Of Scarlett

Four Class 1 outings for Adaay Of Scarlett have led to four runner-up finishes, so it’s surely only a matter of time before he finally wins one at this level. He is top weight today, and that should be encouraging for backers, as should the fact that Oisin Murphy is on board. The two-year-old also has far more experience than the other two at the top of the market so knows what is expected in big races like this.

Tip 3 - 3:10 Newmarket - Angel Shared

There are a number of candidates you could make a case for in this race, but it is last year’s winner, Angel Shared, who we think is the one to beat. Won that from a mark of 84 and is now down to 77 after a spring and summer chasing bigger glories. Tested at Listed and Class 3 level, she is back to a Class 4 here. Lost to two of today’s rivals over course and distance last month but was giving plenty of weight away in both cases where she now is the one in receipt of weight.

What is the Staking Plan and How Does a 1pt Win System Work?

We advise each bet as a win single or sometimes as an each way single. You can of course choose to combine the selections in a multiple bet, a Lucky 15 or a Yankee etc and that is a very popular way to follow the horses selected in this column daily.

A 1pt win per horse is advised in general and that means whatever your normal stake is for a bet is used as a point. For many this is £1 and for some this is £10 or more but it is totally relative to the individual and shouldn’t be more than you can afford to lose at any time.

For each way selections we advise a 0.5pt each way stake. So as with the win selections this would be a £1 total bet (50 pence each way) or a £10 total bet (£5 each way).
