He returns to familiar shores looking for revenge after finishing second to rival Christmas Day in the Derby in June, and he certainly appears better now than he did in that race so may take some stopping.

Tip 2 - 3:35 York - Item

Four wins from five career starts for Item include a pair of course and distance wins in Group 2’s. Those wins clearly have him as one of the best middle distance horses of this year’s three-year-olds, but he’s yet to strike at Group 1 level. The one blot on his record came in the Derby where, despite going off at 11/2, he was a well-beaten ninth. This is a much more suitable trip, ground and track combination for him and he should be able to serve it up to Ombudsman and Constitution River, who dominate the betting.

Tip 3 - 4:20 Chepstow - Misunderstood

Two career wins for Misunderstood, both the first two races of his career in 2024 don’t scream obvious winner here, but he’s too intriguing in a Class 4 not to have a look. Won a Group 3 as a two-year-old by over four lengths and then finished third in a Group 3 the following year. Horses he beat in those races are now rated in the 90s and 100s and won Listed and Group races. He hasn’t even finished in the top three since. However, after thundering home for a decent enough fourth after missing the break last time out, we’re willing to see if the softer ground and rain might bring about enough improvement for a win.

What is the Staking Plan and How Does a 1pt Win System Work?

We advise each bet as a win single or sometimes as an each way single. You can of course choose to combine the selections in a multiple bet, a Lucky 15 or a Yankee etc and that is a very popular way to follow the horses selected in this column daily.

A 1pt win per horse is advised in general and that means whatever your normal stake is for a bet is used as a point. For many this is £1 and for some this is £10 or more but it is totally relative to the individual and shouldn’t be more than you can afford to lose at any time.

For each way selections we advise a 0.5pt each way stake. So as with the win selections this would be a £1 total bet (50 pence each way) or a £10 total bet (£5 each way).
