The UFC heads down under this weekend to Sydney, Australia. Qudos Bank Arena will host UFC 293, where Israel Adesanya defends his middleweight championship against Sean Strickland. It’ll be something of a homecoming for the champion, who moved to New Zealand as a child.

UFC 293: Adesanya v Strickland

There is no doubting who the star of the show on the UFC 293 card is. If it weren’t for Israel Adesanya, it’s pretty unlikely we would be seeing this event take place in Australia. After conquering is “boogeyman”, Alex Pereira, he looks set to reign atop the middleweight division for the foreseeable future. 

Sean Strickland is no mug, though. He’s put a disappointing end to 2022 behind him with two impressive victories this year. Adesanya is a big step up in class for the fifth-ranked fighter, though. In fact, Strickland has lost his last three fights on numbered UFC cards, which probably points towards him just not being at this level. 

This fight was originally pencilled in as Adesanya versus the No. 1-ranked Dricus Du Plessis, but the South African sat out due to injury. That’s a fight we’re sure to see somewhere down the line, and it’s likely to be for the title after a successful defence for Adesanya this weekend.

UFC 293 Undercard Preview

Beyond the main event, fan favourite, Tai Tuivasa, will be looking to put on a show in his heavyweight bout with Alexander Volkov. The crowd will be keen to see a shoey from “Bam-Bam”, but the odds suggest it won’t be coming after a victory. Three other bouts feature on the main card, with flyweight Manel Kape (10) the only ranked fighter outside of the top two fights on the billing. 

Early prelims are due to start at 11:30pm UK time, with the later prelims scheduled for 1am. The UFC 293 main card gets under way at 3am.

Israel Adesanya is on a different level to Sean Strickland. That’s with all due respect to the challenger, but Adesanya should just have far too much for him to cope with. Prior to his two fights with Alex Pereira, Adesanya’s previous four bouts all went the distance, with him winning three of them. The co-main event will be a blink and you miss it clash between two bruising heavyweights. Under 1.5 rounds is available at 5/6 with bet365, but backing Alexander Volkov to win in round 1 at 5/2 looks like an even better play.
