England striker Harry Kane is the favourite to be top scorer at this summer’s European Championships with the Three Lions among the frontrunners in the Euro 2020 betting.

The Spurs man has been in blistering form for his club this season, scoring 23 Premier League goals and making 14 assists in 35 appearances, finishing top of both charts.

Kane’s place in Gareth Southgate’s starting XI is assured and his formidable record of 34 goals in 53 caps for his country puts him on course to beat Wayne Rooney’s England record of 53 goals, which the former Manchester United striker achieved in 120 appearances.

Kane will expect to top up his tally in the group stages at Euro 2020 with England 2/5 favourites to win Group D, which also contains Croatia (3/1), Czech Republic (12/1) and Scotland (16/1).

Southgate’s side are favourites in each of their group games, all of which are scheduled to take place at Wembley, and Tottenham’s talisman is therefore 5/1 to top the goalscoring charts come the end of the tournament.

Indeed, Kane is already a World Cup Golden Boot winner and considering he takes England’s penalties, it’s quite clear why bookmakers have earmarked him for favouritism in the wildly popular top scorer market.

Romelu Lukaku is Kane’s closest contender in the eyes of the odds as the Belgian forward, who has an impressive 59 goals in 91 appearances for his country – a national record.

The Inter Milan striker has enjoyed a new lease of life since leaving Manchester United and with Belgium facing Denmark, Finland and Russia in Group B he is expected to hit the ground running when Euro 2020 finally begins, one year behind schedule.

We asked former England international Emile Heskey who his money would be on if he was to bet on the top scorer at Euro 2020 and the former striker - who went to four major tournaments with the Three Lions - picked Lukaku, who he believes is underrated in world football.

“He’s got a phenomenal goalscoring record," Heskey told Bookies.co.uk earlier this year. "I don’t think he gets enough respect for what he’s actually achieved in the game and the goals he’s scored and how he’s scored them.

“I think people within football do have that respect for him but I’m not sure if those on the outside looking in have quite the same respect.

“He’s not just a goalscorer – he’s brilliant at holding the ball up and bringing players into the game. But I fancy him to be top scorer because of his record.”

Big outsiders to keep tabs on include Robert Lewandowski, a 33/1 chance given Poland’s low expectations. That won’t stop the Bayern Munich striker from fancying his chances against Slovakia, Sweden and Spain in Group E though and Lewandowski is arguably the best No.9 in world football right now on the back of a record-breaking season with the Bundesliga champions.

Meanwhile, Ciro Immobile is sure to attract plenty of interest at 20/1. The Lazio striker doesn’t have the best international record with just 12 goals in 45 games but he’s been consistent in Serie A across five consecutive seasons now and can expect to lead the line for dark horses Italy (14/1).

As for Kane's chances of outscoring his fellow strikers, the biggest obstacle standing in his way could be an off-field issue – the small matter of where he'll be playing his club football next season.

The 27-year-old has reportedly told Tottenham he would like to leave this summer following another below-par season in which the club failed to secure Champions League football for next term for the second campaign running.

Having contested in the 2019 final, Kane had hoped the club would build on their momentum, but Tottenham have been going backwards ever since with sixth and seventh place finishes in the Premier League in the two subsequent seasons.

Manchester City are clear favourites to sign Kane this summer and former England international Ray Parlour hopes the Tottenham striker's furture is resolved before the Euros for the good of the nation.

“In an ideal world, and as a selfish Englishman, I hope he is sold,” Parlour told Bookies.co.uk.

“Whatever is going to happen, I hope it’s done before the Euros. Harry is a very good pro, if he ends up still at Spurs for next season he’ll be 100 per cent committed, doing the best he can.

“I really hope it won’t be a problem, but let’s hope he has his future resolved before the tournament. Whether he goes or not probably depends on whether clubs are priced out of the market.

“If Daniel Levy demands £150million for him, I’m not too sure the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea will be willing to meet that.

“Levy wants the most he can get for him I’m sure, but what is a good deal for Spurs? In the back of his mind, he’ll have a figure. It could be like a game of poker, but we’ll have to see what happens.”

It seems improbable that Kane’s future will be sorted by June 13 when England begin their campaign against Croatia, but Parlour believes the Tottenham star will not let the matter impact his form.

“He’s had a great season in a Spurs shirt, the goals he’s scored and assists he’s got,” he said. “He’s never let England down and he’s going to be a major player if we’re to go and win it.”
