They say that the cream eventually rises to the top, and never is that a truer phrase than in sport. It may be monotonous to see the same faces and teams winning the big prizes year in and year out, but there’s a reason for that; they’re simply too good for the competition.

It’s true that there have been one or two shocks at this year’s Women’s Wimbledon tournament, which is always another area of sport that the supporter enjoys, but in the main, the better players will be there or thereabouts at the business end.

The story of the tournament to this point has to been young Cori ‘Coco’ Gauff’s run to the Round of 16, dispatching former champ, Venus Williams, on her way to wowing the crowds in southwest London. At just 15 years of age, the youngster entered the tournament as a long shot with the top bookmakers, but her performances signaled she is going to be around for a while yet, and don’t bet against seeing her lift the coveted trophy in years to come.

Favourites Early Departure

French Open champ, Ashleigh Barty, hadn’t dropped a set and was unbeaten in 15 consecutive matches before taking on American Alison Riske. It certainly was ‘a risk’ for Barty as it turned out.

One of the tournament favourites, Barty started the match with four consecutive aces and then breezed through the opening set to take it 6-3. However, Riske came storming back in the second and broke the Australian twice on the way to a 6-2 set win.

The winner-takes-all deciding set went Riske’s way, Barty out of sorts and clearly not used to having an opponent match her stride for stride and point for point. The reward for Riske is a date with fellow American, Serena Williams.

With just three wins needed now to take the crown, the last eight women are within touching distance, but Serena will believe that she is the one to be toppled.

Not long after Barty’s surprising loss, third seed Karolina Pliskova was downed in an epic battle with world No.69, Karolina Muchova, the latter coming through an exhausting tie 4-6, 7-5, 13-11.

And the upsets didn’t end there. In the final game of the day, third seed and double Wimbledon champion, Petra Kvitova, despite winning the opening set, was toppled by Britain’s Johanna Konta 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Women’s Wimbledon 2019 Outright Betting Odds

Incredibly, there are only four seeds left in the Women’s draw, and just two are in the top 10.

Purely on experience alone, Serena Williams - 6/4 with Bethard - has the edge on the other competitors left in the tournament.

As we get down to the nitty-gritty, the American knows what it takes to get over the line and is well used to dealing with the associated pressures.

Jo Konta, backed into 5/1 with Unibet, may well believe that this is finally the year to end four decades of waiting for a British woman to win the title.

A confidence-boosting win over Kvitova, especially when seeing three match points slip through her fingers, will stand her in good stead for the rigours ahead.

Simona Halep, at 11/4 with Betway and Elina Svitolina at 10’s with William Hill are worth a look, with the other four players at long odds.

Riske is 14/1 with Betway, whilst you can get 25/1 for Muchova, 33/1 for Strychova and Zhang is 50/1.

What ‘manic Monday’ has taught us, however, is that anything is possible when you put your mind to it, and there promises to be some fascinating twists and turns before the week is out.

At this point, it’s difficult to look past Serena Williams adding to her glittering array of titles, and odds as slim as 6/4 with Bethard reflect that.

Kvitova might’ve had something to say about that before going out to Jo Konta, however, seventh seed Simona Halep, fresh from seeing off teen sensation Gauff, will really fancy her chances now.

In the lower half of the draw, she’s not scheduled to cross swords with Williams until the final, should they both make it that far.

For Halep’s quarterfinal, she finds herself up against world number 50, Zhang Shuai. Come through that unscathed and then only eighth seed, Elina Svitolina, or Karolina Muchova stand in her way of making the final at the very least.

None of those players, with respect, will give Halep sleepless nights, so current odds of 11/4 with Betway represents the value bet.
