It's tough at the bottom of League Two, however Carlisle appear to have found a route away from the drop zone. Can they follow the same path tonight when the Shrews come to town?
The Cumbrians have never been too far from the bottom of League Two this season, however they have a new manager at the helm and have been enjoying a taste of success since his appointment. From relegation favourites, the side now look likely candidates for a mid-table finish, especially if they find a way past Shrewsbury Town at Brunton Park tonight.
This Northern outpost has seen its fair share of dramas over the years, including a spell in the Football Conference. A repeat of that season is too hard to contemplate for the Blues faithful and much hope has been placed in new manager Keith Curle.
So far he has delivered. Ok so much needs to be done, however the signing of Charlie Wyke from Hartlepool United just two weeks ago may well prove to be an inspired buy. The forward scored on his home debut in the win over Mansfield Town and he improved on this with a brace in the 2-0 defeat of Tranmere in Carlisle’s last outing, netting twice within five minutes.
Can he score against a Shrews defence which is the most solid in League Two? Of course he can. Carlisle are very definitely on the up and despite the obvious fact that a single new signing cannot turn a season around, Wyke has certainly helped to lift the side and confidence will be extremely high coming into this match.
Nevertheless, Carlisle’s season to date cannot be ignored and it is hardly a surprise to see the Cumbrians at 7/2 to beat a side sitting firmly in the top three in the division.
Despite this, Carlisle are on a high at the moment with three wins from their last four outings. The Shrews have won just one match from their last three on the road and will certainly struggle against a well organised Carlisle rearguard.
That’s not to say that the visitors will go home goalless. Shrewsbury are amongst the division’s top scorers and will likely get their names onto the scoresheet, however Curle will steer his side to their third successive victory tonight and dent the promotion hopes of the visitors.
