Two European heavyweights clash in the World Cup quarter finals and it won’t be pretty

France have apparently surpassed expectations in Brazil although a group consisting of Honduras, Ecuador and Switzerland was about as easy as it could have got for Les Bleus.

A last sixteen clash with Nigeria was also pretty generous and this ultimately represents a true test of this young team, although the same can be said of Germany.

Didier Deschamps is happy with what he’s seen from his team in this tournament, although he knows that improvement is required if they are to progress at the expense of Die Mannschaft.

He said: “Nigeria played a very physical game and had a real presence across the pitch. It was a challenge to go up against that, but we managed it. For an hour, the teams were pretty even, but then we were able to get the upper hand in the last half an hour.

“The Nigerians were tired, and they started leaving gaps in their defence. We were dynamic and quick when it mattered, while Nigeria were slowing down. This deserved win will make us even stronger for the rest of the competition. I’m very proud to have reached the quarter-finals”.

France are a very backable 23/10 with Coral bookmaker to claim victory in ninety minutes although we have seen several games go to extra-time during the knockout stage and this could also be one of them.

Coral are on hand with a tempting 5/4 that Les Bleus qualify although can one really bet against a German side who are making a habit of reaching the business end of football tournaments?

Joachim Low’s team haven’t quite hit top gear in this World Cup but they are into the last eight and looking to set up a last four clash against Brazil or Colombia.

Ladbrokes offer 29/20 about a Germany win and that looks like a fair price based on the fact that so many Bayern Munich players can unite to make life difficult for the opposition.
