The college football national championship game on Monday night was a blowout. But early indications are the title race will once again be neck-in-neck between Clemson and Alabama next season.

The Tigers and Crimson Tide are knotted in college football betting futures odds to win the 2019-20 College Football Playoff national title game. Alabama and Clemson are each +200 to win the crown at both SugarHouse and 888 Sport, despite the Tigers’ 44-16 domination in Monday night’s title game in Santa Clara, Calif.

Clemson cruised to the national championship despite entering Monday night’s game as a 5.5-point underdog. The Tigers won against the spread for the third straight game and for the eighth time in 11 games with a healthy Lawrence at quarterback.

Alabama failed to cover for the third straight game, and for the fourth time in its final five outings to end the season.

Title Odds for Other Prominent Programs

The next four teams also have identical moneylines at both books: Ohio State at +700, Georgia at +800, and Michigan and Oklahoma each at +1600.

Notre Dame, which reached the College Football Playoff this season along with the Tigers, Tide and Sooners, is +3300 to win the title next season, when the championship game will be held in New Orleans.

The championship odds next season for other prominent programs, according to 888Sport: Florida and LSU are each +2500, Auburn is +2800, Penn State is +4000, and Texas, Central Florida, Washington, Mississippi State, Michigan State, Texas A&M and Oregon are each +5000.

Several once-prominent programs have dropped well down in futures odds after enduring difficult 2018 seasons. Southern California, Tennessee, Florida State and Virginia Tech are all +10000 to win the national championship next year, according to SugarHouse.

Miami and UCLA are each +15000, and Nebraska is +20000. The longest shots on the board are all +100000, a group that includes Power 5 programs Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana and Oregon State.

Early Look at 2019-20 Race

The horse race between the nation’s two preeminent programs is also reflected in the split among early top 25 polls for next season, with some having the Crimson Tide on top and others positioning Clemson Clemson as No. 1.

The Tide and Tigers have now played for the national championship three times in the past four seasons, with Clemson winning two of those contests.

While Clemson loses much of a defensive front that was the best in the nation, the Tigers return rising sophomore quarterback Trevor Lawrence, rising sophomore receiver Justyn Ross, rising junior running back Travis Etienne and a host of other potent skill position players.

Alabama returns rising junior quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, rising junior receiver Jerry Jeudy and rising junior nose tackle Quinnen Williams, among other anchors of this year’s team.

Tagovailoa and Lawrence are also widely considered the frontrunners for the 2019 Heisman Trophy.
