Washington Capitals wing Alex Ovechkin, already the all-time NHL leader in goals, reached another milestone on Nov. 20 when he climbed into the career top 10 for points.

Ovechkin’s hat trick last week in Washington’s 8-4 victory against the Montreal Canadiens gave him 1,643 career points and pushed the Russian veteran past Joe Sakic (1,641 points) for a spot in the top 10.
It’s fitting that “Ovi” scored three goals and had one assist in the game that put him in the top 10. For his career, the 40-year-old wing has a record 907 goals and 736 assists. He is the only player in the league’s all-time top 10 in points with more goals than assists. By comparison, all-time points leader Wayne Gretzky had more than twice as many assists (1,963) as he did goals (894).
The Caps will need all the offense that Ovechkin can muster, even at his age, if they are to recover from a slow start. Ovechkin’s first problem in trying to climb the all-time scoring list is that the guy right in front of him keeps moving up as well.
Sidney Crosby is No. 9 on that list with 1,710 points and he’s still getting it done in his 21st season with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Crosby enters today’s action with 23 points (13 goals and 10 assists) in 21 games, showing no signs of slowing at age 38. Ovechkin has 20 points (10 G, 10 A).
Just ahead of both Ovechkin and Crosby in eighth place is another Penguins legend, Mario Lemieux, with 1,723 points. Ovi would need 80 points in the 60 remaining games this season to catch Lemieux; a difficult task but not impossible. What Is In Ovechkin’s Future?
After that, the question of Ovechkin’s place on the career points list depends on the decisions he makes next. His contract with the Caps ends after this season and the longtime captain has not indicated whether he will return to the NHL for the 2026-27 campaign.
He could, of course, stay with the Caps, likely on a one-year or two-year deal. He finally won a Stanley Cup in 2018, the capper to a glittering career, but he plays like a man motivated to win another. Ovechkin might also choose to retire while he’s still among the league’s best goalscorers.
Or … maybe he returns to his native Russia to play for another year or two? He was a top player with legendary club Dynamo Moscow before joining the Capitals and he returned to play 31 games for them in the 2012-13 KHL season while a lockout delayed the start of the NHL season.
One thing that could help rejuvenate Ovechkin as he weighs his decision is this season’s Olympic break. Russia is banned from competing in the Olympics (individual athletes can compete under a neutral flag, but not athletes in team sports) because of the nation’s invasion of Ukraine. So while the NHL season shuts down in February, and many top league stars vie for Olympic medals in Milan/Cortina, Italy, Ovechkin can rest for a few weeks.

It’s going to be a tall task for the Capitals legend to climb any higher on the all-time points list. But we don’t doubt that he is capable of defying our Alex Ovechkin odds.
