There was once a time when the U.S. Women’s Basketball Team was at a ridiculous level of domination at the Olympics. The rest of the world is starting to catch up, but the USA remains the standard bearer of women’s hoops.

The team won its eighth consecutive gold medal at the Paris Olympics, edging France 67-66 in the championship. Now it’s time to not just win a ninth gold in 2028, but defend the home turf. The 2028 Olympics are set for Los Angeles.

Who will make the team, and who won’t? And who may be in the starting five? Bookies.com veteran oddsmaker Adam Thompson breaks down the landscape and has revealed his odds for the starting lineup four years from now.

Top 2028 Women's Olympic Basketball Candidates

A’ja Wilson led the team in scoring, rebounding, and blocks all while shooting 59.2%. In the gold medal clincher, she had 21 points, 13 rebounds, and four blocks. She was the best player and she’s just getting started.

Breanna Stewart averaged 16.3 ppg and 5.3 rpg and was the veteran leader the team needed at the end, with a huge block on a 3-point attempt against France that helped seal the gold.

Wilson solidified her spot as the best player in the WNBA, and perhaps the world. She just celebrated her 28th birthday and should be ready to go for the Los Angeles Olympics. Stewart turns 30 on Aug. 27 and could turn into a veteran leader off the bench in four years.

But who joins them not just on the team, but in the starting 5?

Jackie Young (26) was supposed to be a depth piece off the bench, but the guard finished only behind Wilson and Stewart in scoring. Post-player Kahleah Copper (29) was also moved from the bench to a critical performer down the stretch, scoring eight points in the final five minutes of a defensive slugfest vs. France. Naphessa Collier (27) finished third in minutes played, behind Wilson and Stewart, and was especially important on the glass.

Sabrina Ionescu (26) was the youngest member of the team and played 13.2 minutes per game. She’s likely to be back and in a bigger role.

Brittney Griner (33), Alyssa Thomas (32), Chelsea Gray (31), Jewell Loyd (30), and Diana Taurasi (42) all had fairly limited roles and in four years will be well north of the average age of a basketball Olympian. Kelsey Plum (turns 30 on Aug. 24), if back for 2028, is more likely to take over that “veteran off the bench” role.

Now, on to potential new Olympians in 2028. It starts, of course, with Caitlyn Clark (22) and Angel Reese (22). Clark, notably, was considered a snub this time around. If she keeps on her current pro trajectory, there seems little keeping her off the ’28 roster and out of the starting lineup.

The same could be said of Clark, who is averaging 13.5 ppg and 11.9 rpg in her rookie season in the WNBA.

Clark’s Indiana Fever teammate and former No. 1 overall pick Aliyah Boston (22) would provide major muscle down low. A lineup with the 6-5, 200-pound Boston and the 6-4 smooth Wilson would be very tough on opponents.

Cameron Brink (22) was supposed to be on the U.S. 3-on-3 Olympic roster before a torn ACL in June ended those hopes. The 6-4 Brink was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft by the L.A. Sparks.

We’re talking four years from now, so current college stars could get a real look. That includes UConn guard Paige Bueckers (22) and USC guard JuJu Watkins (19).

Arike Ogunbowale (27) was snubbed and blamed politics for not making this year’s team. She torched the Olympic team for 34 points, all in the second half, in leading a WNBA squad to an exhibition win over the Olympians in July.

Megan Gustafson (27) didn’t make the U.S. team, but the former Iowa standout and Aces forward was the top player for Spain at the Olympics.
