In just his third season, Darius Garland was an All-Star at just age 22 for the Cleveland Cavaliers. But five seasons in, Garland took a bit of a step back statistically, and now he apparently wants a change.

Garland’s reps – namely, Rich Paul and infamous Klutch Sports, are expected to request a trade if the Cavaliers re-up with star guard Donovan Mitchell on a long-term extension this off-season. Apparently, one of them has to go.

With Mitchell on the brink of signing a max extension, Bookies.com veteran oddsmaker has updated his 2024-25 team NBA future odds for Garland.

Darius Garland's Next NBA Team

Garland was drafted fifth overall in the 2019 NBA Draft. The Cavs went from 19-63 prior to Garland’s arrival, to 19-46 (Covid shortened), from 22 wins in 2020-21, to 44 wins in 201-22. Then Mitchell came to town, and the two of them led Cleveland to 51 wins in 2022-23.

This season, Cleveland won a similar 48 games and advanced to the second round of the NBA Playoffs for the first time since LeBron James was in town.

But Mitchell called out a perceived lack of maturity and focus on the team – and in-the-know insiders pointed to Garland as the likely source of frustration.

Garland’s numbers took a considerable dip this year, too, including 3.6 fewer ppg and 1.3 fewer assists. He missed 25 games, and has missed at least 13 every season except the Covid year.

Whereas Mitchell is likely to get a max deal in a new contract, Garland has four years left on his deal. A team that trades for him knows he’ll be in uniform for a while.

That could intrigue are more up-and-coming team, and Garland, who feels he needs to be the focal part of a team, per his agent.

However, it appears the Cavs aren't planning to trade Garland. They're looking to run it back with Mitchell, Garland and C Garrett Allen, with new coach Kenny Atkinson leading the way. Cleveland isn't interested in a rebuild after its most-successful season in a while. But if Garland's people request a trade and a team meets audacious demands, he could still get moved.

The San Antonio Spurs and Utah Jazz need a floor leader, and each has cap space to make a splash. He’d be a top-two option on either of those teams. The Toronto Raptors could make a similar claim.

The Miami Heat and Los Angeles Lakers could lead floor-leading PGs, but draft capital could be an issue to compete in a trade war.

The Phoenix Suns would love to move Devin Booker to a shooting guard role and hand ball-carrying duties to someone else.
