A day after the Super Bowl matchup was determined, FanDuel announced it had entered into a deal with an NFL team that lost in the playoffs to Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In a deal that came out on Thursday after FanDuel was allowed to go live in Virginia, FanDuel and the Washington Football Team announced the first market access partnership in the nation between an NFL team and an online sports gaming platform, according to a news release.

Virginia is FanDuel’s ninth state to bet on sports.

“We are excited to bring America’s No. 1 sportsbook to residents and visitors to the Commonwealth of Virginia,” Matt King, CEO of FanDuel Group, said in the news release on Monday. “We are honored to partner with an iconic sports franchise and we plan to deliver the most fan-focused, and secure, mobile sports betting experience to the passionate sports fans of Virginia.”

Under Virginia’s sports betting law, the Washington Football Team was given preference for a mobile sports betting permit based on meeting certain criteria for sports teams headquartered in Virginia. And it was given the option to partner with an established sports wagering operator to run the business.

Washington chose FanDuel as its operational partner to jointly hold the permit.

“When this truly unique opportunity presented itself, it was a natural fit to strategically align with our long-time partner, FanDuel, as we knew they’d establish a best in class sports betting marketplace, grounded by innovation and consumer protection,” Scott Shepherd, senior vice president of corporate partnerships and hospitality for the Washington Football Team, said in the release. “We’re very excited for all this groundbreaking partnership will offer our valued fans throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia as part of their game day experience.”

More on Virginia Launch

Since FanDuel went live in Virginia and launched the state’s online sports betting market, DraftKings and BetMGM were also approved by the state lottery. DraftKings went live Sunday just before the kickoff of the NFC Championship Game between the Buccaneers and Green Bay Packers.

The Washington Football Team lost to the Buccaneers, 31-23, on Jan. 9 during the NFL Wild-Card Playoff weekend. Formerly known as the Redskins, the WFT won the NFC East with a 7-9 record. It was the team’s first season under former Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera.

FanDuel has the Kansas City Chiefs as a 3-point favorite over the Bucs in the Super Bowl on Feb. 7 in Tampa. The Chiefs are -166 on the moneyline and the Over/Under is 56.5.
