England are on the brink of exiting their own Cricket World Cup after a disastrous defeat to Australia on Tuesday.

The Cricket World Cup hosts looked on course to beat their fiercest rivals after whittling Australia to 285 at Lord’s.

But a ruinous top-order collapse — which saw England fall to 53-4 at one stage — proved the bedrock of a miserable 64-run defeat for Eoin Morgan’s men.

The loss comes after defeats to Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and means England face the very real possibility of not making the semi-finals this summer.

And cricket sportsbooks in the UK have reacted to Australia’s comeback win by moving England into third favourites to win the competition — behind the Aussies.

Bookies Unibet are now pricing England at 11/4 (+275) to win the Cricket World Cup, having previously put them in as 21/10 (+210) second favourites behind India to claim the trophy.

Yet it is now Australia who claim that second spot at 9/4 (+225) and look good for a spot in the semi-finals.

Can England Still Win The Cricket World Cup?

England can mathematically still reach the semi-finals of the Cricket World Cup. But it will be a struggle.

The hosts sit fourth in the table right now, a point above fifth-place Bangladesh and two ahead of Sri Lanka. But England face the worrying prospect of playing India and then table-toppers New Zealand in their next two games.

It was assumed before the Australia match that England would have to win two of their final three matches to secure a spot in the semis. They almost certainly now have to beat India and New Zealand.

All Eyes On Other Results

Bangladesh are in the driving seat to overtake England into fourth spot here.

Yes, they play India in their next match on Tuesday, July 2. But then Bangladesh take on Pakistan in a match they very well could win.

Sri Lanka too look good to pick up points, with matches against South Africa and West Indies to come.

Their last game of the group stage is against India but by this point Sri Lanka may have already qualified.
