For the past 20 seasons, Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin has been one of the best players in the NHL. He is a three-time Stanley Cup champion who has collected the Calder Trophy for Rookie of the Year, the Hart Trophy for league MVP, the Conn Smythe Trophy for playoff MVP and the Art Ross Trophy (twice) as the league’s top scorer.

But could Pittsburgh, the only NHL home Malkin has ever known, ask the 39-year-old to waive his no-move clause? His contract is up at the end of this season. Pittsburgh Penguins (-145)

The Penguins are the only team that Malkin has known since they drafted him second overall in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. The forward’s No. 71 jersey will be hung in the rafters after he hangs up his gloves. Given his legendary status in Pittsburgh, Malkin most likely will stay put this season. But in 2025-26, with the Penguins currently outside of a playoff spot (albeit only by one point), they could ask Malkin to move his NMC and play for another NHL team. Minnesota Wild (+475)

The team already picked up superstar defenseman Quinn Hughes in a trade with the Vancouver Canucks this season. Adding someone like Malkin, who is a proven winner, could help the Wild break through this season. Colorado Avalanche (+750)

The best team in the NHL this season is the Colorado Avalanche. They are the odds-on favorite to win the Stanley Cup, but Colorado is always looking to improve around the edges. If there was any team that Malkin would waive his NMC for, it’s likely a star-studded contender such as the Avs.

Florida Panthers (+1100)

The Florida Panthers are the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions, but they have been struggling this season and are currently on the outside of the playoffs looking in. If they want to make another deep postseason run, they will need reinforcements, and adding someone like Malkin would be a huge addition to a Florida team that needs another center. The Panthers have +850 Stanley Cup odds at FanDuel Sportsbook to capture a third consecutive Stanley Cup.

Vegas Golden Knights (+1500)

The Vegas Golden Knights are always one of the top Stanley Cup contenders. They lead the Pacific Division as of Jan. 13, but the Edmonton Oilers and others are hot on their tails. The Golden Knights might want to make a big move and bring in another star, a bill which Malkin certainly would fill.

New York Rangers (+1800)

The New York Rangers are not in a playoff spot, so they need to make a big move or two to really take a run at the postseason. They have a veteran team, so Malkin would be a nice fit for the Rangers if they intend to make a late run at the playoffs.

The Field (any other team) (+1200)

If Malkin is truly available for a trade, expect most NHL playoff contenders in need of a veteran center to reach out to the Penguins about his availability. Though he is 39, Malkin has 31 points in 29 games this season, proving he is still an elite scoring option when he is healthy (the Russian has missed 15 games this season).
