New Hampshire’s long wait for sports betting is ending on Dec. 30.
New England-area bettors looking for a safe and legal way to back future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady and the 12-3 New England Patriots to make another run at the Super Bowl will have DraftKings as a mobile betting option in New Hampshire. Betting will begin next week, according to a report in the New Hampshire Union Leader of Manchester.
A few months ago, New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu said his state having its sports betting program operational in time for Super Bowl LIV this February was a virtual lock.
The launch of DraftKings in New Hampshire will make good on Sununu’s promise by giving bettors that promised Super Bowl betting option with time to spare.
New Hampshire bettors will be able to bet on every single game of the upcoming NFL playoffs and more.
Betting Options For New England Sporting Events
The Patriots can secure a first-round bye next week by defeating the Miami Dolphins in their final game of the regular season. New England is currently the No. 2 seed in the AFC, so their first playoff game would either be the weekend of Jan. 4-5 or Jan. 11-12.
Regardless, New Hampshire bettors can bet on NFL playoff action when the games start Jan. 4.
Moreover, other popular New England-area teams will be on the board for New Hampshire bettors next week, including the NHL’s Boston Bruins and the NBA’s Boston Celtics, both of which are in the middle of their regular seasons. And the popular Boston Red Sox are just a few months from starting their MLB regular season.
DraftKings New Hampshire Launches In Time for CFP
Perhaps even more timely is that some college football bowl games will be in play including the College Football Playoff final on Jan. 13 in New Orleans.
Those CFP Final slots will be determined this Saturday when No. 1 LSU faces No. 4 Oklahoma in the Peach Bowl in Atlanta and No. 2 Ohio State faces No. 3 Clemson at the Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Arizona.
So New Hampshire bettors will probably be watching those games with heavier interest than they would have otherwise, particularly if they plan to formulate a winning betting strategy for the national championship game.
Moreover, it means New Hampshire bettors will have the opportunity to piece together some pretty epic parlay cards featuring some of the best NFL, NHL, NBA and college football games around.
None of that was part of Sununu’s promise, but it appears to be happening.
New Hampshire Sports Betting Setup
DraftKings was granted sole access for New Hampshire mobile sports betting through the New Hampshire state lottery. The company’s offer of 51% of Gross Gaming Revenue returned to the state was too much to pass up compared to other bidders.
Also, the state is on track to offer up to 10 brick-and-mortar sportsbooks at some point. According to the New Hampshire Union Leader story, six New Hampshire communities have approved legal sports betting: Berlin, Claremont, Franklin, Laconia, Manchester and Somersworth.
Other Northeast States Aren’t So Lucky
While New Hampshire bettors can rejoice, the five other states in New England aren’t feeling so lucky as 2020 approaches.
Rhode Island was the first state in the region to take a sports bet back in 2018, but the only option at that point was in-person at one of the state’s two casinos. The state did bring along mobile betting this year, but only through one operator and the additional disruptive requirement that all mobile bettors must first register in person at a casino.
Still, that’s more action than the rest of the states in the area, which includes Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts and Vermont. None of those states had legalized sports betting in any form.
