NFL Teams 2026 Miles Traveled: 49ers Shatter All-Time Miles Record With Australia Trip

The NFL schedule won't be released until May, but we already know that the San Francisco 49ers will set an NFL record for miles traveled by a league franchise.
The 49ers will cover 38,105 miles thanks to the NFL season-opener against the LA Rams in Melbourne, Australia, and a "home game" in Mexico City. The team also has road games in Kansas City, Arizona, Dallas, Atlanta and at the New York Giants. The Niners break the record set in 2025 by the Chargers (37,086 miles) by more than 1,000 miles.
The game against the Rams in Australia adds 15,738 linear miles round trip. And the visit to Mexico City adds another 3,854 miles to what would normally be a home game. The visit to Australia covers a whopping 34 time zones round trip. Melbourne will be 17 hours ahead of U.S. Pacific Standard Time when that game in played on September 10th in the U.S.
In all, the 54 time zones crossed by the Niners will also crush the record of 42, also set by the Bolts last year.
Here's NFL Teams 2026 Miles Traveled breakdown for each game:
- 49ers at Rams - Melbourne, Australia - 15,738 miles
- 49ers Home Game - Mexico City - 3,854 miles
- 49ers at Atlanta - 4,258 miles
- 49ers at New York Giants - 5, 111 miles
- 49ers at Cardinals - 1,224 miles
- 49ers at Chiefs - 2,958 miles
- 49ers at Seahawks - 1,412 miles
- 49ers at Cowboys - 2,934 miles
- 49ers at LA Chargers - 616 miles
The jet-lagged Niners will cross through 54 times zones, or the equivalent or more than 2 days.
The 49ers are the visiting team for the game in Australia for the Rams, thus their normal regular-season trip to play the Rams at SoFi is not included above. Our round-trip distances are determined by using Google Earth coordinates from stadium-to-stadium and then calculated using the WGS-84 ellipsoidal Earth model. That is used for GPS and includes the curvature of the earth, as opposed to measuring in a straight line.
The Rams will cover 33,125.64 miles in all, including their trip Down Under and road games at Philadelphia and Washington.
NFL Set To Shatter All-Time League Miles Record
NFL Teams 2026 Miles Traveled number will also break the overall mark of 625,947 miles set last season. This is thanks to a record number of 9 international games. In addition to the games mentioned above in Australia and Mexico, The Shield visits Paris this season for the first time. The Saints are the home team in that game. Other international games will be played in London, Munich, Rio de Janeiro, and Madrid.
Los Angeles Chargers covered more miles last season than any NFL team in history. Thanks to a Week 1 round-trip to Brazil and six Eastern Time Zone games, the Bolts traversed 37,086 miles last season, traversing 42 time zones and toying with jet lag along the way.
Not only is that an NFL record, it was more regular-season mileage than all but 3 MLB teams this past season.
Overall, 7 NFL teams traveled more miles than it takes to go around the world last season. The distance around Earth at the equator is 24,901 miles. The teams going "around the world" and more in 2025-26 are the Chargers, Los Angeles Rams, Seattle Seahawks, San Francisco 49ers, Atlanta Falcons, and Indianapolis Colts. The Seahawks and 49ers did not leave the continental United States.
