A permit for Arizona sports betting has been awarded to Penn National Gaming and Barstool Sports.

The news, confirmed by a Penn National spokesperson Tuesday, comes a day after FanDuel Sportsbook was the first to say it had been approved by the state of Arizona. The Arizona Department of Gaming has announced that there were more applicants than available number of licenses (20).

The start of legalized sports betting in Arizona is Sept. 9, in time for the opening week of NFL betting. From Aug. 28, sportsbooks are allowed to market and sign up bettors as Arizona kicks off a pre-registration period.

Daily fantasy sports contests can start in Arizona on Aug. 28, a day after the department is supposed to declare which operators and their sports betting apps have received permits.

Penn National Gaming/Barstool Sports partnered with Phoenix International Raceway on a multi-year agreement, becoming the exclusive sportsbook of the West Valley raceway.

Other professional sports teams in the Valley that have applied for sports betting and/or daily fantasy sports operator licenses include the Arizona Diamondbacks with Caesars Sportsbook; the Phoenix Mercury with Bally’s; the Phoenix Suns with FanDuel; and the Arizona Cardinals with BetMGM/Gila River Community.

The PGA Tour and TPC at Scottsdale have partnered with DraftKings in Arizona to open a sportsbook at the facility. United Soccer League Championship squad Phoenix Rising FC has also signed a partnership with an unnamed operator.

What’s Next in Arizona?

The department has until Friday to notify operators that their applications have been approved or denied. From there, operators can begin pre-registration on Saturday, leading up to the start of legal betting in early September.

The 20 operator licenses will be split evenly among Arizona tribes and professional sports teams.

ADG Public Information Officer Maxwell Hartgraves told BetArizona.com that the office would not comment on which operators received licenses until the notification window closed on Friday.

The Arizona Department of Gaming will host a pair of calls with operators on Wednesday and on Sept. 1 to go over the application process and other topics involving the rollout of sports betting in the Grand Canyon state.
