With summer in full swing, the 2023 Women’s World Cup, co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand is also well underway.

Where sport is concerned, the Americans aren’t exactly synonymous with soccer betting. Unless that is, we’re talking about the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT), which has dominated the international football stage for over three decades.

The USWNT is the winningest team in Women’s World Cup history, claiming the title four times since the tournament’s inception in 1991, including back-to-back titles in 2015 and 2019.

High expectations precede “The Gals” (as they are also known (informally)) ahead of the 2023 Women’s World Cup as the two-time defending champions. If the World Cup soccer outright odds were any indication, then the USA is the team to beat Down Under. No ifs or buts about it. This outlook is echoed unanimously across sports betting apps.

But, as bettors know only too well, tournaments such as this are decided on the field. And when the stakes are so high, the occasion so big, anything can happen. Even the unthinkable.

As always, we’ve put together a sports betting primer for the 2023 Women’s World Cup, complete with a betting preview, pre-tournament soccer odds, betting tips and the latest promo codes from the best sportsbooks.

Bet365 Women’s World Cup Betting Promo

Bet365’s bonus code BOOKIES welcome offer is not the most generous. Frankly, the Up to $100 in Bet Credits for new users doesn’t even touch the sides of what BetMGM, Caesars or FanDuel are offering their new users. However, this doesn’t mean that new users should fob off one of the biggest global brands in the sports betting industry.

Getting anything is better than nothing at all. What’s more, the modest $100 deposit match bonus which is received in bet credits is a great starter sign-up bonus for new users that want to try out this sportsbook or novice bettors that are looking to dip their toes into the gambling world.

Of course, Bet365 offers a comprehensive suite of promotions, including the soccer parlay bonus, soccer substitute guarantee, and the multi-sport parlay bonus – all of which will be handy tools to enhance the betting experience come the Women’s World Cup in July.

That’s not all, however. SuperBook offers ongoing promotions that will keep users engaged, especially this summer during the World Cup.

2023 Women’s World Cup Futures

No nation (represented in the men’s or women’s game) has won three in a row. This is not surprising for a tournament that comes once every four years because it would require dominating the game over the course of 12 years. That is no mean feat in any sport, never mind soccer.

Only the privileged few get to write history – a fact that is not lost on the USWNT as they prepare for their bid for a historic, first-ever three-peat on the World Cup stage. All while a collection of top contenders will be hot on their heels, nations such as England,  Germany, Spain, France and hosts Australia, to name a few.

Will USA deliver?

USA +275

The Americans have set the standard on the world stage. So, it’s no surprise that they are the team to beat, though winning a third consecutive title is a daunting prospect by any standard.

New head coach Vlatko Andonovski took over from Jill Ellis, who stepped down in 2019. His first stint in international competition at the helm of the USWNT came at the 2021 Olympics, where USA clinched the bronze.

Towards the end of 2022, the Americans suffered their first three-match losing streak in 29 years. They lost to England (2-1), Spain (2-0), and Germany (2-1). However, they’ve since bounded back behind an eight-match winning streak which includes winning all three of their matches at the 2023 SheBelieves Cup presented by Visa to win the title. They beat Canada (2-0), Japan (1-0) and Brazil (2-1).

Anchoring the team are veteran stars such as Megan Rapinoe, Alex Morgan, Crystal Dunn and Becky Sauerbrunn. Emergent stars such as Trinity Rodman Sophia Smith and Sofie Huerta add youthful exuberance and depth to the squad.

England+350

England claimed the UEFA Women’s Euro title in 2022 at the expense of Germany in the final. That timely triumph has set them up in the eyes of bookmakers as the biggest threat to the United States at the 2023 Women’s World Cup. Some betting apps tip England as the second favorites while others have them as co-favorites with the USA.

As far as form is concerned, the Lionesses threw down the gauntlet by winning all of their WC qualifying matches. They have yet to reach a World Cup final, however. To date, their best is a semi-final run (2015 and 2019) and a bronze medal in Canada in 2015 (d. Germany). At the last World Cup, England lost to Sweden 2-1 in the Bronze medal game.

Germany +350

Be it the men’s or women’s game, Germany is always going to be a contender. And that fact was recently underscored by their runner-up finish to England in the UEFA Women’s Euro championship game.

After the USA, the Germans have won the second-most World Cups (2).  Along with the USA, they are the only nation to win back-to-back titles, accomplishing the feat from 2003 to 2007. Die Nationalelf also finished runners-up in 1995 to Norway and twice in fourth place after losing the bronze medal game (1991 and 2015).

Spain +600

Spain were among the favorites to win the 2022 UEFA Women’s Euro title, but they stumbled in the quarterfinal hurdle against England. By all accounts, the absence of their star player Alexia Putellas, the Ballon d’Or winner, due to injury hindered them.

Since the Euros, La Roja are undefeated in 10 of their last 12 matches – their lone hiccup came in a 2-1 loss to Australia in the FFA Cup of Nations in February. Good news, Putellas

France +800

France suffered a disappointing 2-1 loss to the United States in the 2019 Women’s World Cup quarterfinals on home soil. To date, Les Bleus’ best result was a fourth-place finish in 2011.

Les Bleus won the Tournoi de France earlier this year, narrowly edging Denmark in the competition. Other participants included Norway and Uruguay.

The Rest of the Field

Brazil is the South American champion. Japan and China have established a tradition of success in Asia, but only Japan has climbed the summit of this prestigious competition.

European nations such as Denmark and Norway have star-studded players that could propel them into the knockouts. While co-hosts Australia, who beat Spain in a pre-tournament warm-up match, will be motivated on home soil.

Nations making their World Cup debut include Haiti, Ireland, Morocco, Philippines, Portugal, Vietnam and Zambia.

How to Bet 2023 Women's World Cup

Moneyline: Betting the moneyline is the most straightforward bet in sports where a bettor simply picks a side to win. In soccer, it’s common to see a three-way moneyline with the third option being the draw (or tie). Soccer is typically a low-scoring game with games often ending in ties after 90 minutes.

Double chance:  Betting the double chance allows bettors to bet on two of the three outcomes simultaneously. Instead of betting on the moneyline and backing either Team A, Team B or the Draw, a bettor can bet on Team A or B to win or draw, thus spreading the risk.

Spreads: The spread or the point spread is one of the most popular sports betting types – even in soccer. Sportsbooks usually roll out a spread anywhere between 0.5 to 2 goals in soccer, though they can be wider depending on the matchup involved.

If Team A is favored with a -1.5 spread, they need to win the match by two or more goals to cover. Alternatively, if Team B is the underdog with a spread of +1.5, they can either lose by no more than one goal or win outright.

Totals: The totals (or goal line) are pretty straightforward, denoting the total number of goals scored in a match. Simply put, bookies project a number of expected goals in a match. Bettors bet whether the final score will go over or under that total.

Futures: Oddsmakers will set futures odds, projecting various wagers such as tournament winners, highest goal scorer, Ballon d’Or winner, and so on. Thus, bettors can place wagers on the teams and players they believe will triumph in the corresponding markets.

Props: Proposition bets are wide-ranging and can be a lot of fun. Here bettors can bet on just about every aspect of the tournament – nothing is off-limits. Common soccer prop bets include which player will score a goal in a match, how many corner kicks will be taken, will there be a penalty shot given, will there be a red card given, and so on.

2023 Women’s World Cup FAQs

When is the 2023 Women's World Cup?

The tournament began on Thursday, July 20 and concludes on Sunday, August 20, 2023. It is the ninth Women’s World Cup since the inaugural tournament, then called the Women’s World Championship, was hosted by China in 1991.

Where is the 2023 Women’s World Cup tournament?

Australia and New Zealand are co-hosting the 2023 Women’s World Cup. The host cities in Australia are Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

How many nations are competing in the 2023 Women’s World Cup?

For the first time, the draw will be comprised of 32 nations, up from 24 that competed in France in 2019. Host nations Australia and New Zealand received automatic entry into the final tournament. Twenty-seven nations qualified for the tournament from the six continental zones: Africa,(CAF) Asia (AFC), North and Central America and Caribbean (CONCACAF), South America (CONMEBOL), Oceania (OFC) and Europe (UEFA). These are: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Morocco, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway, the Philippines, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United States, Vietnam, Zambia. Finally, 10 nations competed in the playoffs tournament for the remaining three spots. The playoffs winners were Portugal, Haiti and Panama.

What is the tournament format?

The tournament begins in the group stage. The 32 nations are divided into eight groups, four nations in each group. Each nation will play three matches in the group stage. The top two teams in the group will advance into the knockout stages (R16).

Which nation won the 2019 Women’s World Cup?

The United States claimed the title in 2019, beating the Netherlands 2-0 in the final on July 7 at the Stade de Lyon. It marked the USA’s fourth championship title and second in a row after claiming it in 2015 behind a 5-2 win over Japan in Edmonton, Canada.

Which nation has won the most Women’s World Cups?

The USA leads with four titles. German has two titles (2003 and 2007) while Norway (1995) and Japan (2011) are the only other two nations to triumph in this competition.

Who are the tournament favorites in 2023?

Four-time champion USA are tipped as the team to beat across the sportsbook exchange. They are closely followed by reigning European champions England as the next-best bet. Spain, Germany and France are also deemed to be top contenders, along with Sweden and host nation Australia. However, Netherlands, the 2019 runners-up, and Canada, the current Olympic gold medallist, are being tipped as middling contenders as we look at the pre-tournament soccer betting markets.
