Patrick Mahomes 

Mahomes was the MVP last year and he is the clear-cut top quarterback in the league. Every year going forward, Mahomes is going to be either the betting apps favorite or close to the favorite to win the award.

Josh Allen 

If it weren’t for an early-season elbow injury, Josh Allen might have been the league MVP last year. Allen totaled 42 touchdowns and led the Bills to a 13-3 record. Buffalo has added even more playmakers to their offense this year, including first-round pick TE Dalton Kincaid. 

The Bills are going to put even more work on the shoulders of Allen and he should put up video-game-like numbers again this season.

The Chargers have just made Justin Herbert the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history. It was probably a good decision to make that move now as Herbert is poised for a massive season. Los Angeles has added Kellen Moore as their offensive coordinator as they hope he will open up the offense. 

They also drafted WR Quentin Johnston in Round 1, giving Herbert another weapon in the passing game. Entering his age-25 season, Herbert has all the tools around him to post MVP type of numbers during the 2023 season. 

Joe Burrow 

Everything is in place for Joe Burrow to have his best season yet. The Bengals have dramatically improved the offensive line, adding Pro Bowl LT Orlando Brown. They’ve got more depth on the unit than ever and they have arguably the best receiving corps in the NFL. The only thing that might hold Burrow back is himself. 

He’s already dealing with a calf injury that could cause him to miss some regular-season games. But if he is healthy, there is no reason why Burrow can’t be in the MVP discussion this year. 

Jalen Hurts 

You could make a strong case that Hurts should have been the league’s MVP last season after leading the Eagles to the No. 1 seed in the NFC. He ran for 13 touchdowns and threw another 22 to give Philadelphia one of the most explosive offenses in the league. 

Hurts should have another fantastic season in 2023 as they are loaded with offensive weapons and should be among the highest-scoring teams in the league.

2023-2024 NFL MVP Sleepers

Aaron Rodgers 

Can you call a four-time NFL MVP a sleeper? Probably not. But just based on the odds, he isn’t a bad bet. Rodgers appears to be highly motivated now that he is in New York and will play with the best-supporting cast he’s had in a while. If the Jets can win the AFC East and get back in the playoffs, he’ll certainly get some consideration. 

Brock Purdy 

Remember when Brock Purdy was 5-0 as a starter in the regular season and won two playoff games for the 49ers? His elbow injury has certainly calmed down the hype this offseason, but his performance last season was nothing short of spectacular. He avoided the PUP list and is on track to be ready for Week 1. 

If he continues to play anywhere near the level we saw him play at last year, he’ll be in the conversation for the award as the 49ers are among the top teams in the NFL going into the year. 

NFL MVP Winners By Position

The MVP award has historically been a quarterback award, especially as of late. The last non-quarterback to win the NFL MVP award was Adrian Peterson during the 2012 season. Peterson racked up 2,314 yards from scrimmage while leading the Vikings to the playoffs with Christian Ponder at quarterback. 

There have been 67 MVP awards handed out in NFL history and 46 of them have gone to quarterbacks. The only other position that has more than one MVP winner is running back with (18). Only two defensive players have ever won the MVP award (LB Lawrence Taylor, 1986, DT Alan Page, 1971) and one specialist (PK Mark Moseley, 1982).
