From little Boise State, Ashton Jeanty lit the college football world on fire in 2024. His 2,601 rushing yards ranks second in a single-season only behind Barry Sanders. He also led the nation in attempts and in touchdowns, took second in Heisman Trophy voting and won every RB award there is to win. 

Jeanty will be the first running back selected at the 2025 NFL Draft. The question is, which teams value the position enough to take a leap? Could he even go Top 10? Top 5? 

Bookies.com veteran oddsmaker Adam Thompson has locked in his NFL odds as to which team selects Jeanty on April 24.

Running backs were considered second-class NFL players, not worth investing high draft picks or big free agent money. That is, until teams saw what Saquon Barkley meant to the Philadelphia Eagles and Josh Jacobs meant to the Green Bay Packers. Perhaps RB will get a jolt of relevance at team meetings this off-season. 

Jeanty stands to reap what Barkley and Jacobs sowed. He is considered the lone first-round RB prospect in the 2025 NFL Draft, and has the chops to single-handedly change a team’s rushing fortunes in Week 1.

Everyone knows the Dallas Cowboys not just want, but absolutely need, an answer at running back. Only the Chiefs and Raiders. Ezekiel Elliott and Rico Dowdle weren’t the answer; Elliott was already cut and Dowdle is a free agent. If Jeanty is available at No. 12, Dallas can fill its biggest need with Jeanty. 

But there’s a chance Jeanty doesn’t drop that far. 

The Las Vegas Raiders ranked dead-last in rushing and yards per attempt – no team was worse at carrying the ball. Vegas has the No. 6 pick. The one conundrum: The Raiders have a lot of holes to fill, including the quarterback. If Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders falls to No. 6, the Raiders likely go in that direction. 

The Cleveland Browns (No. 2), Carolina Panthers (No. 8) and Chicago Bears (No. 10) all pick in front of the Cowboys, and all could have “upgrade at RB” as an NFL Draft goal. It’s unlikely that Cleveland goes RB with the second overall pick, but the pick is reportedly for sale; the Browns could trade down at get Jeanty, as long as its opening pick comes before No. 12. 

The team most likely to try and trade up to acquire Jeanty is the Denver Broncos, who went rush-by-committee in 2024 to league-average output. Adding an RB boosts the chances of success for second-year QB Bo Nix.
