Brandon Aiyuk has made tangible improvements in each of his four seasons as wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers. Now, as contract extension negotiations have fizzled, he wants out.

Aiyuk officially requested a trade on July 16, as the numbers he wants and those the Niners are offering aren’t close. Unless he agrees to a long-term deal, Aiyuk will be an unrestricted free agent in 2025.

Bookies.com veteran oddsmaker Adam Thompson has revealed his sports betting NFL odds for Aiyuk’s next 2024 team.

Possible Next Team Prospects

Aiyuk was drafted in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the 49ers. Since then, he’s started in all but two games he’s played.

After catching 78 passes for 1,015 yards in 2022, he caught 75 passes in 2023, but for 1,342 yards, a major jump in yards per reception and per attempt. Aiyuk was named to the AP All-NFL Second Team and was a big part of the Niners getting to the Super Bowl.

But contract extension talks have not gone well this off-season. In fact, no negotiations have taken place since May. So Aiyuk is asking to be traded to a team that might want to sign him long-term.

Aiyuk is scheduled to earn $14.1 million on the fifth-year option of his rookie deal. That’s well, well below his perceived market value of $26.5M, per salary cap website Spotrac

The Niners have indicated they have no intention of trading Aiyuk. Yet, San Francisco is an estimated $26 million over the expected 2025 salary cap, so something has to give before then. It appears Aiyuk may be that “something.”

The Niners may have the NFL’s best pass-catching group in the NFL, with Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel outside, George Kittle at tight end, and Christian McCaffrey out of the backfield. Their depth, with Jauan Jennings and rookie Ricky Pearsall, isn’t bad either. They could trade Aiyuk, get a decent haul for him, get some cap relief, and not miss a huge beat.

One could argue about 16 teams, or half the league, is in need of immediate help at WR. Of those teams, about half can’t pay him this year, and $24M for next year (and beyond) is out of the question. But it absolutely works for other teams, some of which want to get busy on winning.

When it comes to straight cash, nobody can compete with the New England Patriots, who have $41.4M this year and $102.6M next year to spend. That they enter this season with probably the worst pass-catching group in the NFL, a brand-new QB in Drake Maye, offers an extra incentive to get a WR1 into the building.

But Aiyuk reportedly turned down a lucrative contract and trade offer from the Pats. He wants to get paid AND win, and New England can only offer one of those for the time being.

If Aiyuk is going to get picky, and the Niners are going to allow him to do so, trade options dwindle in a hurry.

The same could be said for the Pittsburgh Steelers, who traded Dionte Williams and are riding with George Pickens and Van Jefferson. Aiyuk offers a big upgrade and another target for Russell Wilson, and is even better from a cap perspective, currently at +$89.7M for 2025.

The Los Angeles Chargers no longer have Keenan Allen or Mike Williams, both cap casualties. It could be odd, then, for them to pursue Aiyuk. But new coach Jim Harbaugh isn’t interested in losing, the Chargers have a top-tier QB in Justin Herbert, and LAC is now OK from a cap perspective, at $20.4M this year and $52.5M for next.

The Cleveland Browns and Washington Commanders have viable targets but are looking to take next steps, the Browns for Deshaun Watson, the Commanders for rookie Jayden Daniels. Both teams have the cap space to make it work, too.

The Buffalo Bills' WR room looks nothing like it did last year with Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis now elsewhere. Chase Claypool was put on season-ending IR, so the Bills are really void of talent/depth at the position for superstar QB Josh Allen. Unfortunately for the Bills, they're also mostly void of salary cap space, and it doesn't get better with Allen's cap hit rising from $30 million this year to $60 million in 2025.

The Field is led by other teams in the hunt have either a great need but limited cap space, or vice versa, but not the double-combo, including the Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos, Las Vegas Raiders and Arizona Cardinals. The Dallas Cowboys have both, but it’s tough to imagine the Niners trading Aiyuk to a win-now NFC rival.
