On paper, it appeared the aging Los Angeles Rams were going to have a rough 2023 season after going 5-12 the season prior. But they don’t play games on paper, do they? 

The Rams bounced back from the one-year hiccup, going 10-7 and getting to the postseason for the fifth time In seven seasons under coach Sean McVay. Matthew Stafford is back for his 16th season, but DT Aaron Donald has retired, leaving a gaping hole in the middle of the D-line.

2024 Los Angeles Rams NFL Draft Prospects

Led by an offensive renaissance, with Puka Nacua and Cooper Kupp as massively productive receivers, the Rams bounced back from 32nd in yards and 27th in points scored in 2023, to 7th and 8th, respectively. 

Now the focus goes back to the defense, which struggled to get to the QB last year and must replace its ultimate disruptor, Donald. Upgrades across the D-line and cornerback will be the top priorities in Round 1. 

While the top-two Edge rushers are surely to be off the board by No. 19, other elite sackers should be on the road, more so than in most drafts. 

Chop Robinson had a modest four sacks for Penn State last season but was named a third-team All-American for his overall production, and is projected to be a better pro than collegian.

Laiatu Latu of UCLA, the other first-round talent at Edge, is another possibility here. 

The interior line makes sense for obvious reasons. If Byron Murphy, the top DT in the draft, is available at No. 19, he won’t be available at No. 20. Jer’Zhan “Johnny” Newton of Illinois was a first-team All-American and is an active D-tackle, akin to what they’re used to with Donald (though not all-timer productive, of course). 

A couple of the several projected late-round 1 cornerbacks could go in Round 2. But if none of the preferred linemen are around at No. 19, it’s an area to improve for the Rams. Nate Wiggins of Clemson or Cooper DeJean of Iowa, if available, could be enticing for a team in need.
