It was a scene that sent shock waves through Kansas City: Patrick Mahomes being helped off the field, walking gingerly as he received supportive slaps on the shoulder pads from teammates. And the dislocated kneecap that forced the Chiefs’ star quarterback to the locker room rippled into sportsbooks regarding NFL betting as well.

The injury to the 2018 NFL Most Valuable Player had an immediate impact on Kansas City’s Super Bowl betting odds, dropping the Chiefs to +1200 at FanDuel — tied with Green Bay for fourth-best title odds behind New England, New Orleans and San Francisco. Entering the week, the sportsbook had listed the Chiefs at +600, second favorite behind the Patriots.

Mahomes was scheduled to undergo an MRI exam on Friday to reveal the extent of the damage but Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that the quarterback is expected to miss around three weeks:

Backup Matt Moore finished Kansas City’s 30-6 victory over the Broncos on Thursday night after Mahomes was injured on a quarterback sneak near the goal line in the first half.

Mahomes MVP Odds Also Impacted

Mahomes’ odds of repeating as NFL Most Valuable Player also took a hit. The Chiefs quarterback now has +1400 MVP odds according to 888sport, ranking him behind Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson (the favorite at +150), Houston quarterback Deshaun Watson, Carolina running back Christian McCaffrey and Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

With Mahomes out, the Chiefs are also 3-point home underdogs in their next game Oct. 27 against Green Bay, according to FanDuel. And the injury to the Chiefs quarterback also led many sportsbooks to shorten the odds of Super Bowl favorite New England, which now stand at +250 according to FanDuel.

Chiefs Turn to Matt Moore

Moore, 35, is 15-15 as starter in the NFL. He most recently started two games for Miami in 2017, both losses. Moore retired in 2018 with an eye toward getting involved in coaching and scouting, but returned to football in August of 2019 when he was signed by the Chiefs after Chad Henne suffered an ankle injury.

Kansas City went 15-1 last season, falling to New England in the AFC Championship Game. The Chiefs stand at 3-2 after Thursday’s victory, which snapped a two-game losing streak. Kansas City remains the overwhelming favorite to win the AFC West, their -335 odds well ahead of Oakland’s +500 according to DraftKings.

Mahomes, 24, had passed for 2,180 yards with 15 touchdowns to one interception this season before going down Thursday night. He threw for 5,097 yards with 50 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in his MVP campaign last season.
