Elias Ymer (Q) vs Casper Ruud

The advent of the European clay swing couldn’t have come at a better time for Casper Ruud as he attempts to regain the form that saw him reach the finals of both the French Open and the US Open in 2022.

Ruud is coming off a solid run on clay, including reaching the Rome Masters semis. He faces uncharted territory in Paris with a lot of points to defend from last year’s run to the final (l. to Nadal).

The good news for the Norwegian: Elias Ymer (No.155 in the ATP rankings) is a beatable opponent. That is, assuming the pressure of the occasion doesn’t get to him.

French Open Best Bet: Ruud -7.5 -115 at BetMGM

Daniil Medvedev vs Thiago Seyboth Wild (Q)

Daniil Medvedev made no secret of his feelings about playing on clay. He didn’t fancy it. But that changed two weeks ago when he surprised everyone (himself included) by winning the Rome Masters title – his first-ever title on the red dirt.

And just like that, Medvedev set himself up as one of the legitimate contenders in Roland Garros.

Medvedev’s newfound clay credentials will be tested by qualifier Thiago Seyboth Wild – a proper clay specialist. Medvedev should win and advance. But taking a set of Medvedev wouldn’t be beyond Seyboth Wild’s remit.

French Open Best Bet: Medvedev in four sets +240 at Bet365

Holger Rune vs. Chris Eubanks

Holger Rune is a legitimate contender to win the French Open title, priced as the +850 bet in pre-tournament markets. American Christopher Eubanks is a potential up-and-comer. But, as things currently stand, he’s outmatched by Rune in every aspect of the game.

French Open Best Bet: Rune in three sets -250 at Bet365

Michael Mmoh vs. Taylor Fritz

This is a mismatch in every sense. Taylor Fritz not only outranks his fellow countryman Michael Mmoh, but he’s proving to be an all-surface player and a consistent top performer.

With a solid European clay swing behind him, underscored by a 9-5 record, featuring semi-final runs in Monte-Carlo, Munich and Geneva, you can expect Fritz to overcome Mmoh comfortably.

French Open Best Bet: Fritz in three -300 at Bet365

Tommy Paul vs Dominic Stricker (L)

Lucky loser Dominic Stricker (No. 116 in the ATP rankings) strikes an unassuming pose as we look at the latest tennis odds for his first-round matchup against the No.17 ranked Tommy Paul, despite his recent surge in the rankings.

The 20-year-old Swiss south paw claimed two challenger titles this season including the Prague 1 title (clay) earlier this month.

Admittedly, Paul represents a step up in quality (on paper). But with the American going just 1-4 on clay at the ATP level – prompting him to look to build up his confidence at a challenger level tournament where he reached the final but lost to Andy Murray), – Stricker might fancy his chances.

French Open Best Bet: Stricker +225 at FanDuel

Yoshihito Nishioka vs J.J. Wolf

With the tennis betting market poised delicately between Yoshihito Nishioka and J.J. Wolf, it’s safe to assume that this R128 matchup could go either way.

Oddsmakers favor Wolf ever so slightly, largely down to a positive run on clay. But the American’s resolve is going to be tested in a best-of-five by Japan’s Nishioka, who is a solid returner, dogged scrambler and, in general, a tough customer.

Iga Swiatek vs Cristina Bucsa

Defending French Open champion Iga Swiatek is sure to be challenged in her bid to win a third French Open title and second in a row. Top players such as Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina have already taken her measure in Madrid and Rome, respectively.

That said, it’s hard to see a similar such challenge coming as early as the first round or from a longshot such as Cristina Bucsa. Typically, Swiatek is sharp, ruthless and stingy in the early rounds.

French Open Best Bet: Swiatek -8.5 -110 at Caesars

Rebeka Masarova vs Coco Gauff

Coco Gauff has a lot of points to defend in Paris after reaching the 2022 French Open final. These are uncharted waters for the American teenager. Her suspect form, seeming low confidence and tough opener against clay specialist Rebeka Masarova add up to a difficult first round match. Indeed, the potential for the upset is real here.

French Open Best Bet: Masarova +315 at FanDuel
