Karen Khachanov vs Lorenzo Sonego
Russia’s Karen Khachanov hasn’t been lighting it up in Paris. The eleventh seed overcame an early scare and a tricky third-round opponent to book his spot in the R16. The level of the competition, however, jumps up at this stage.
Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego delivered one of the tournament’s biggest upsets, defeating seventh seed Andrey Rublev in a come-from-behind, five-set win in the R32. That kind of a performance is sure to send him into the second week of the French Open on wave of confidence.
Whether Sonego will pull off a second upset in a row remains to be seen. But he has the chops to do it. Thus, making this a total tossup for tennis picks. Get the popcorn out!
French Open Best Bet: Over 38.5
Novak Djokovic vs Juan Pablo Varillas
Juan Pablo Varillas capitalized on a great corner of the draw to reach the fourth round. Granted, he upset 13th seed Hubert Hurkacz in the R32, in his third five-set marathon in a row, no less. But – let’s face it – the Pole was always going to be vulnerable on this surface against a bona fide clay aficionado like the Peruvian.
Varillas’ reward: a R16 date with the legendary Novak Djokovic. The Serbian is breezing through the French Open draw, dispatching one opponent after another without dropping a set and barely breaking a sweat.. Expect more of the same from Djokovic in what is another conspicuous mismatch.
French Open Best Bet: Djokovic -9.5
Carlos Alcaraz vs Lorenzo Musetti
NextGen stars Carlos Alcaraz and Lorenzo Musetti are set to collide in a highly anticipated R16 showdown. By all accounts, Musetti is poised to give Alcaraz his first proper test at the French Open. Not only is he coming off an upset over No. 14 Cameron Norrie, but he’s also in fantastic form, advancing into the R16 without dropping a set and relinquishing just a handful of games.
Nobody doubts Alcaraz after a nigh perfect first week, which he capped off by the brutal dismantling of Denis Shapovalov in a 6-1,6-4,6-2 win. He’s the smart bet here to win and advance into the quarterfinals. But this has barnburner written all over.
French Open Best Bet: Over 33.5
Sebastian Ofner vs Stefanos Tsitsipas
This year’s French Open has seen several surprise packages emerge, one of which is veteran Sebastian Ofner who is in the midst of a dream run into the R16.
Everyone is eager to find out if the 27-year-old Austrian can keep it going. After dismissing Maxime Cressy, Sebastian Korda and Fabio Fognini -- the latter of which took him the distance in a five-setter – to book his place opposite Stefanos Tsitsipas, with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line.
Tsitsipas represents a major jump in talent and quality for Ofner, one that few expect he’ll overcome. But, with nothing to lose and everything to play for, at the very least Ofner could give the Greek a sterner test than the tennis odds would suggest.
French Open Best Bet: Ofner +8.5
Karolina Muchova vs Elina Avanesyan
Karolina Muchova flew under the radar in Paris, but now, as she reaches the fourth round, she’s quickly established herself as a dark horse title contender. She upset No. 8 seed Maria Sakkari (R128) and No. 27 Irina Begu (R32).
Similarly, Elina Avanesyan – a lucky loser -- has come out of seemingly nowhere to establish herself as an upset monger in Paris. The Russian has grabbed her second chance by the scruff of the neck. She stunned 12th seed Belinda Bencic in the first round then beat wild card Leolia Jeanjean (R64) and qualifier Clara Tausen (R32).
It would be foolish to dismiss Avanesyan’s chances here, but Muchova has the experience to get her through this match.
French Open Best Bet: Muchova -4.5
Sloane Stephens vs Aryna Sabalenka
Belarussian Aryna Sabalenka is through to the fourth round of the French Open without dropping a set and relinquishing no more than seven games in a match. In Sloane Stephens, however, she faces a former top player, US Open champion and French Open finalist.
Stephen’s best days might be behind her, but the American appears to have found her stride in Paris. Expect her to give Sabalenka a real battle, even throw the kitchen sink at her in a tight-two setter or three sets..
French Open Best Bet: Sabalenka in two
