It’s hard for any horse to win the Kentucky Derby. Looking at the morning-line odds for the 146th Run for the Roses, it might be hard for Tiz to Law to lose it.

At 3-5, Tiz the Law is one of the most prohibitive favorites in Kentucky Derby betting history. With the race four months later than usual, he’s also the most accomplished, having already won the Belmont Stakes and Travers Stakes, races normally run after the derby.

Just three horses are less than double-digit odds on the morning line and that trio will start from the three outside posts. To their inside are a parade a long shots who are likely to spice up winning trifecta and superfecta tickets. Finnick the Fierce was scratched on Friday but the No. 1 gate that he drew will be left vacant. Program numbers remained unchanged, a Derby news release said.

Who Will Win the 2020 Kentucky Derby?

It’s hard to go against Tiz the Law, who has romped in all four of his races in 2020. But in a chaotic, unconventional year, it’s worth taking a chance on Honor A.P. The lightly raced colt comes off a disappointing second to Thousand Words in his last race, but his previous start was a powerful win in the Santa Anita Derby.

Any improvement from that performance gives Honor A.P. serious upset potential. Throw in the derby-winning connections of trainer John Shirreffs and jockey Mike Smith, and Honor A.P., who will likely be running midpack early, makes sense at odds of 5-1 or higher.

Tiz the Law is the deserving favorite and has already won at the Kentucky Derby distance. But his backers will have to accept one of the shortest prices in derby history. The last two less-than-even-money derby favorites, Arazi (4-5) in 1992 and the entry of Easy Goer and Awe Inspiring (4-5) in 1989, failed to get the job done.

Spectacular Bid (3-5) was the last to successfully do it in 1979. Tiz the Law might be the next, but it’s a question of value and a handful of others in the race have speed figures that at least make this race competitive.

Throw out his last race and Solo Volante is not a hopeless longshot. Trainer Patrick Biancone acknowledges he made a mistake running the horse back on just 10 days rest and finishing a well-beaten sixth in the Belmont Stakes. With four wins in his previous six starts, a freshened Solo Volante can pick up some pieces late and be a factor in the Derby exotics, and possibly more, at big odds.

Of the others that horse racing bettors should consider, Ny Traffic can be a factor if he wants the distance. … Attachment Rate has only one lifetime win, but shows steady improvement and may be rallying late. … King Guillermo may be fast enough, but a four-month layoff heading into the Derby seems less than ideal. … Authentic will likely set the pace and take them as far as he can.
