One of the most dramatic seasons we’ve ever seen has reached the end of the road, with 30 of the top players in the world battling it out at the Tour Championship in Atlanta.

This is the only tournament of the year featuring a staggered scoring system, with players given a certain number of strokes based on their standing in the season-long race. So top-ranked Scottie Scheffler begins the week -10 at East Lake, while No. 2 Patrick Cantlay begins at -8, No. 3 Will Zalatoris at -7, etc.

That’s all factored into the golf betting odds, which will be based on the final result with starting strokes. That’s why Scheffler is such a significant favorite, with +260 golf odds to win in the 30-man field. Cantlay is next at +330, while Xander Schauffele is third at +600 – Zalatoris, who will begin one shot ahead of Schauffele, is +1000 for his East Lake debut.

Rory McIlroy To Win (Without Strokes)

Odds: +800 at DraftKings

Bettors need to decide how they want to play it this week, but we’re targeting McIlroy to win without strokes and shoot the lowest overall score of anyone in the field. His odds to win with strokes are +1100, but we’ll gladly go with +800 instead because he’s starting the week six shots behind Scheffler.

McIlroy hit it absolutely beautifully at last week’s BMW Championship. He had his second-worst putting performance of the season and still logged a T-8 finish – that’s how good he was with the driver, leading the field in Strokes Gained Off the Tee by a wide margin. That’s the name of the game at East Lake, where McIlroy has won twice before. He also clearly likes these greens having finished with positive Strokes Gained Putting numbers at East Lake for three years in a row.

The game is on point, the venue is one of his favorites and we love the Irishman’s chances again this week.

2022 Tour Championship Betting Tips

This is a strong championship venue and there’s a reason the Tour heads to East Lake for the biggest cash prize of the season. It’s a long, stern test that will challenge the world’s best players without any gimmicks.

Big hitters certainly have an advantage, but it’s not a bomb and gouge setup. Big misses are penalized and it’s all about fairway position on the approach shots. The irons need to be sharp as well for what amounts to a total test in Atlanta.

As for the format, don’t look very far down the board on betting sites if you’re taking action with the starting strokes. Those top players earned their head start by playing consistently better than everyone else for an entire calendar year, so it’s no surprise they tend to convert when given a nice cushion – Patrick Cantlay began at -10 and finished with a one-shot win over Jon Rahm last year, while Dustin Johnson also converted with a -10 start and won by three shots in 2020.

However, McIlroy began five shots behind top-ranked Justin Thomas and shot the lowest gross score for the win in 2019 – the first year the new scoring system was implemented.
