Last season ended a two-year postseason run for the Colorado Rockies. It might not sound like much, but it was the longest run in the franchise’s history.

The 2019 edition won just 71 games. The 2020 expectations have been set decidedly low in a division that includes the powerhouse Dodgers and up-and-coming teams in San Diego and Arizona.

Arenado is a slugger and he’s scored at least 100 runs in four straight seasons. But he’s more than that, a total package who hits for power and contact. And he’s in the middle of a batting order that regularly is near the top of MLB in scoring

Arenado hasn’t had fewer than 110 RBIs in any of his last five seasons, and he’s had 130 or more in three of them, leading the league twice. Charlie Blackmon — Most Hits (+3300)

Blackmon gets on base and his teammates knock him in. It’s been happening for six solid seasons.

That might change in 2020. Blackmon is likely going to be slotted into the No. 3 hole and will be asked to drive in more runs. He should get the opportunity. Sandwiched between Trevor Story and Arenado, Blackmon should see a lot of hittable pitches.

History suggests when he sees good pitches he delivers. Blackmon has finished in the top 15 in total hits the last five seasons, including a league-leading 213 in 2017. He’s batted at least .291 with at least 182 hits in each of the last five years. With his position in the order and his penchant for base-knocks, Blackmon is set for a big season. Rockies — Over 45% Win Percentage (-110)

The Rockies finished a disappointing 71-91 last season, good for a .438 win rate. That won’t get it done to hit the Over for 2020.

But there is reason for some optimism. For one, the Rockies’ batting lineup finished ninth in the league in runs scored, but a promising pitching lineup collapsed. In fact, the entire team collapsed late in the year.

The Rockies were a first-half team in 2019, and another similar start should bode well in this shortened season. They were 40-34 at one point, but went 15-28 in July and August.

Colorado’s much-maligned pitching staff was actually solid in 2017-18 but regressed in a big way last year. The hope is Kyle Freeland rebounds from a rough 2019, German Marquez continues his ascension as a frontline guy and Jon Gray and Antonio Senzatela are solid enough.
