The Shanghai Masters brings an end to the Asian swing of the ATP Tour this week, and all eyes are on Novak Djokovic.

The world's top-ranked player comes into Shanghai just two days after winning the Japan Open. He's been given a brutal draw in China, where he faces potential hurdles in every round of the tournament.

And that has given tennis betting fans hope that another player can defy the odds and capture the title.

Here are the top five bets to place ahead of the Shanghai Masters.

PICK 1: Novak Djokovic +150

Of course, Djokovic is the clear tournament favorite. The Serb remains No. 1 in the world and has recovered from injuries that plagued him during the U.S. Open. Besides his U.S. Open exit, Djokovic has reached the semifinal or better in each of his last seven tournaments. That includes Wimbledon and Roland Garros.

This makes Djokovic a strong bet to win the Shanghai Masters. But there are doubters who claim the 32-year-old may run out of steam. After all, he won the Japan Open final against John Millman only on Sunday. That’s a tight turnaround for a player who increasingly shies away from back-to-back tournaments.

Djokovic enters the Shanghai Open in the second round, meaning he will face either Frances Tiafoe or Denis Shapovalov. That’s not an easy entry into the tournament. He could then face the big-serving John Isner, before a potential quarterfinal clash with Stefanos Tsitsipas, Gael Monfils or the unseeded but dangerous Felix Auger-Aliassime. This is certainly not a routine draw for Djokovic.

PICK 2: Roger Federer +300

Swiss maestro Roger Federer has stayed away from the Asian part of the schedule this season until the Shanghai Masters. The 38-year-old last played in the Laver Cup, where he beat Nick Kyrgios and Isner. Federer has been incredibly selective of his tournaments this year and it almost paid off when he reached the Wimbledon final, only to be beaten by Djokovic.

Still a class above most of the ATP Tour, Federer is a strong price at +300 with 888sport to claim victory in Shanghai. The veteran won his second title here in 2017 and has a largely routine draw for the early stages this week. Barring a potential second-round clash with Marin Cilic, Federer may have little to fear until Alexander Zverev in the quarters. They have a 3-3 record against each other, and this could be Federer’s biggest hurdle before the final.

PICK 3: Daniil Medvedev +400

Russian sensation Daniil Medvedev is seeded third for Shanghai after Rafael Nadal withdrew from the tournament. But the seeding hasn’t necessarily helped his draw. Medvedev is projected to meet Djokovic in the semifinals if he gets past a number of tricky opponents. The Russian could come up against Diego Schwartzman in the third round, and possibly either Karen Khachanov or Andy Murray in the quarters.

Can Medvedev win the Shanghai Masters title? Well, the fact he’s reached the final in each of his last five tournaments will convince some tennis betting fans to back him here. Since Wimbledon, Medvedev has won the Cincinnati Masters and St Petersburg Open, while losing the Washington Open, Canadian Open and U.S. Open finals. The 23-year-old has enjoyed a career-defining run this year and it could continue in Shanghai.

PICK 4: Dominic Thiem +1700

So low is the confidence among bookmakers in Dominic Thiem that 888sports has priced the Austrian as the sixth favorite to win in Shanghai — despite him being the fourth seed. Why? Well, Thiem is a notoriously unreliable hard court player. The 26-year-old is widely considered a clay expert who is yet to fully deploy his talents on the hard surface.

Yet, Thiem comes into the tournament having played Tsitsipas in Sunday’s China Open final. This was a welcome return to the reliable Thiem compared to the player who bombed at the U.S. Open. Thiem, seeded fourth, has a very favorable draw and is expected to make the quarters, where he should beat projected opponent Roberto Bautista Agut. Right now he is a great price to win.

PICK 5: Andy Murray +4000

The temptation to back Andy Murray is certainly here. And for fans who like to play the odds, Murray is a great bet right now. The Brit reached the China Open quarters last week and has a considerate draw in Shanghai. He could well be a quarterfinalist here. With every match won Murray’s price will dramatically fall.

Therefore, if you’re thinking of backing Murray it’s best to do it sooner rather than later and make use of his high odds.
