When the 2021-22 Premier League season kicked off, the prospect of Cristiano Ronaldo returning to England was regarded as unlikely, although the Portuguese soon made his intentions clear. He wanted to leave Juventus and although Manchester City were originally favourites to sign him, the 36-year-old is now back at Old Trafford.

The leading betting sites had previously priced up the Premier League top scorer market without Ronaldo and the other high profile arrival Romelu Lukaku, although the odds were swiftly revised following the arrival of CR7 and it’s no favourite to see him betting favourite to outscore his rivals this season.

Ronaldo wasted little time in getting off the mark after scoring twice against Newcastle United and he then scored at West Ham in his next Premier League clash. We’ve also seen the former Real Madrid forward find the net in Champions League matches against Young Boys and Villarreal.

You can see why the bookies want to keep Ronaldo onside and it appears that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is going to keep him on the pitch as much as possible despite the player’s advancing years. This is a “get out of jail” card for a manager woefully out of his depth at the north-west club and he will hope that Ronaldo can be top scorer domestically although there are a number of other players who could topple him.

Will Ronaldo Take Penalties Off Bruno?

The plot thickens when it comes to the subject of penalty taker at Old Trafford. We know that Bruno Fernandes was on spot kicks last season and that was also the case at the beginning of the current campaign. However, the waters were muddied when Ronaldo arrived, although Bruno stepped up against Aston Villa in the Premier League only to fire an injury-time spot kick over the crossbar.

Bruno then revealed that he was on penalty duties after the Champions League clash against Villarreal although it seems improbable that Ronaldo won’t at some stage take a penalty for Manchester United. Should this be converted, you might expect him to keep the honours and we can’t see Solskjaer standing in his way.

What Odds Can You Back Ronaldo for Golden Boot?

The majority of bookmakers have Cristiano Ronaldo at 9/4 to be 2021-22 Premier League top scorer. When you consider that the former Juve man scored 45 goals in all competitions last season, you can see why he merits respect although those odds imply that he’s less likely to win this prize than be crowned top scorer. It will be interesting to see whether he’s rested if United make headway in the Champions League.

William Hill currently take a dimmer view of his chances of scoring the most goals in the division and are prepared to chalk up 12/5 about Ronaldo landing a prize with which he’s familiar after previously playing a starring role for the Red Devils, although there are a number of other contenders which merit respect and that includes a certain Belgian centre forward operating for Chelsea.

Lukaku Second Favourite in Golden Boot Market

Lukaku also has three goals on the board in the Premier League this season, with the former Internazionale forward plundering two goals against Aston Villa after finding the net at Arsenal. He has drawn blanks against Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester City, although it’s clear that the Belgian is the first choice centre forward for a team who are credible title challengers.

Lukaku has developed into a world-class talent thanks in part to the coaching of Antonio Conte at Internazionale, with Chelsea spending £97.5 million on a player that they ultimately think is a guaranteed source of goals and it could be a thrilling goal race between the forward and Cristiano Ronaldo who are both capable of surpassing the 30-goal mark this term.

Who Are the Other Main Challengers to CR7 in the EPL?

Mohamed Salah has been scoring goals on a prolific basis since his arrival from Roma to Liverpool four years ago. The Egyptian has blossomed at Anfield and the five goals already on the board means that the former Chelsea man is 3/1 with Bet365 to usurp Ronaldo and Lukaku to land the top scorer prize for the third time in England.

Salah is definitely on penalties which can’t be said of his main two rivals right now, with the forward likely to play the majority of matches and it doesn’t appear that injury affects the player too badly judging from his time at Merseyside.

The bookies make the English Premier League top scorer market a current three-horse race, with Harry Kane now out to 16/1 after a lacklustre start for Spurs after previously angling for a move away from the north London club. However, Jamie Vardy and Michail Antonio have both made promising starts in front of goal and perhaps they are viable each-way alternatives.
