While the expansion of the World Cup to 48 teams is going to impact some of the smaller nations possibly getting out of the group, it feels unlikely it will impact which team will finish top here. Indeed, France are one of the favourites for the tournament with top UK betting sites, let alone to top World Cup Group I.
The intrigue could start after France as all three other teams - Senegal, Iraq and Norway - will have designs on qualifying for the knockout rounds. But how does each stack up against one another?
France are the clear favourites to win their group, and it is with pretty good reason. In the last five major championships, they have lost in the final of the European Championships once (2016) and the World Cup once (2022), won the 2018 World Cup and reached the semi-finals of Euro 2024. Didier Deschamps’ men had a pretty easy time of things in qualifying, winning five and drawing one of their six games. They also finished third in the most recent Nations League.

One team likely to be on many people’s lists of dark horses for the tournament are Norway, who are competing in their first World Cup since 1998. Long been seen as a team on the rise with the likes of Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard, this is the first time it has come to fruition in a qualifying campaign. And what a campaign it was, as they won all eight games - including 3-0 and 4-1 against Italy - scoring 37 and conceding just five. Could they go deep in the tournament?
After shocking reigning champions France in their first-ever World Cup game in 2002 and making the quarter-finals, Senegal then had to wait until 2018 before they returned to the biggest stage. In 2022, they made the round of 16 and will be justifiably confident of going deep in the tournament here.
The odds with most UK betting apps would also suggest they can make it out of the group. They topped their qualification group and are still calling themselves the African Cup of Nations champions despite the game officially being awarded to Morocco after the fact. They could be a tough team to come up against.
Iraq are making just their second-ever appearance at a World Cup and first since 1986, when it was held in Mexico, one of this year’s co-hosts. They have only reached the round of 16 in the last two iterations of the AFC Asian Cup, but they did come through UAE to make it to this point. Even with the eight third-placed teams making it through to the round of 32, this group’s strength in depth makes it even less likely they can make it through.

Odds To Qualify From Group I
France not qualifying would be right up there as far as World Cup shocks go. The other teams, while having varying degrees of confidence about qualifying, would be much smaller shocks if they were to not qualify. Find the latest odds from football betting sites here:

- 22 June, 10pm - France vs Iraq - Philadelphia Stadium

Group I Betting Tips
As suggested above, the odds on France winning the group are far too prohibitive to have a go at alone. Norway are fancied by plenty, but the whole group are inexperienced in big tournaments, so the chance could be there for Senegal to finish second in the group. The squad is experienced on the big occasion and will be good enough to keep all games tight at the very least.
Bet on France-Senegal straight forecast to qualify first and second in Group I at 57/20 with 10bet.
