Group J is the home of reigning champions Argentina as they look to become the first country since Brazil in 1962 to retain the World Cup. A thrilling penalty shootout win in Qatar after a 3-3 draw with France gave Argentina a first World Cup since 1986 and treated viewers to a delightful spectacle of a final.
Indeed, 2022 saw Lionel Messi complete his footballing journey by finally winning the World Cup, a trophy that has evaded so many great players and will always. It looked as if the legendary attacker would join that club, especially after losing the 2014 final to Germany, but he finally lifted the World Cup trophy at the fifth attempt in Qatar.
The holders are joined in Group J by Algeria, Austria and Jordan in what should be a compelling group, with second place very much up for grabs even if Argentina run away with top spot - as expected by UK betting sites.

Algeria are appearing in the World Cup for the first time since 2014 when they snuck through the group stage before succumbing to Germany in the round of 16. Though they’ve not been back on the biggest stage in 12 years, they did win the African Cup of Nations in 2019 with a dominant display and reached the quarter-finals of the same tournament last year, so football betting sites are wary of their potential.
For Austria, 2026 marks a return to the World Cup after 28 years away, despite coming remarkably close to qualifying on multiple occasions since then. They’ve reached the last-16 of the last two European Championships and more was certainly expected of them in 2024, so they may come into the World Cup with an axe to grind.
That brings us to Jordan. A rather unknown quantity to most, Jordan were runners-up at the Asian Cup in 2023 and certainly won’t go down without a fight after finally reaching the World Cup for the first time. Star winger and captain Musa Al-Taamari has enjoyed an excellent season at Rennes and will be determined to leave his mark.

Odds to Win Group J
Given their supreme all-round talent and, of course, Messi, it’s no surprise that Argentina are huge favourites with in-play betting sites to win Group J. It would take an unlikely twist for one of the other three to top the group, but it’s worth remembering that Argentina lost their opening match 2-1 to Saudi Arabia at the last World Cup.
Odds to Qualify From Group J
With three teams qualifying from eight of the 12 groups, the odds on many teams to simply reach the next round are quite short. Even Jordan, who have never even played in a World Cup, are still well in the mix at betting apps.
Group J Fixtures
As one of the last groups alphabetically, Group J doesn't kick off until almost a week after the first game. Here's a look at all six fixtures that will take place in Group J:
- 17 June, 2am - Argentina vs Algeria - Kansas City Stadium
- 17 June, 5am - Austria vs Jordan - San Francisco Bay Area Stadium
- 22 June, 6pm - Argentina vs Austria - Dallas Stadium
- 23 June, 4am - Jordan vs Algeria - San Francisco Bay Area Stadium
- 28 June, 3am - Jordan vs Argentina - Dallas Stadium
- 28 June, 3am - Algeria vs Austria - Kansas City Stadium
Group J Betting Tips
It’s hard to see past Argentina winning Group J. La Albiceleste won 12 of their 18 qualifying games and conceded just 10 times whilst scoring 31. However, due to the lack of value in that single pick, it’s worth looking at an Argentina-Austria forecast, which means Argentina have to win the group and Austria finish second.
Austria won their qualifying group comfortably, admittedly without much challenge, and only shipped four goals along the way. They look slightly better than Algeria, and the straight forecast of Argentina-Austria can be backed at 33/20 with 10bet.

How we rank sportsbooks →Who are the favourites for World Cup Group J?
Reigning World Cup holders Argentina are the clear favourites to win Group J. There's not much to split Austria and Algeria next in the betting, whilst Jordan prop up the market as rank outsiders, but they could still cause an upset or two.
What teams are in World Cup Group J?
World Cup Group J is made up of Algeria, Argentina, Austria and Jordan. Argentina are the obvious team to watch, having won the 2022 World Cup, but there's sure to be plenty of interest in Jordan, who are competing in their first ever World Cup.
