England once again fell at the final hurdle of the European Championships, as Gareth Southgate's men lost 2-1 in the final of Euro 2024, three years on from a penalties defeat to Italy at the same stage of the same competition. The tournament in Germany marked the fourth major competition Southgate has been involved in, and he decided to step down after the loss.

He clearly thought that he had taken the team as far as he could, and now England are searching for a new person to lead them to the World Cup in the USA in 2026. The best betting apps have been updating their Next England Manager betting market, with Mauricio Pochettino, Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter among the early favourites. Southgate was given the job on an interim basis from his work with the under-20s and under-21s, and current England under-21 manager Lee Carsley has also on the market for what would be something of a continuity appointment.

Carsley was named interim manager of the Three Lions for the team's internationals in September and October, which potentially gives him a leg up on the competition. The best football betting sites certainly seemed to think so before the team suffered a poor 2-1 defeat at home to Greece with an experimental formation Carsley admitted the team had only practised for 20 minutes. Unsurprisingly, in the aftermath Thomas Tuchel has rushed to the head of the queue, according to the best betting sites.

Potter Early Favourite Despite Chelsea Nightmare

Graham Potter was the favourite wtih most football betting sites to replace Gareth Southgate before his move to Chelsea. He remains short in the market having not taken a job since leaving Chelsea. He was linked with the Ajax and Brighton jobs this summer, but neither move materialised.

It's easy to see Potter eventually taking charge of the England team considering he is such a progressive and modern-thinking coach. Having cut his teeth at Swedish club Ostersunds, he then managed Swansea City before being captured by Brighton. Potter will be linked with the England job should it become vacant, even though his time as Chelsea boss was cut woefully short after a poor run of form that saw him lead the club to only 12 wins from 31 matches.

Eddie Howe a Good Fit For England?

Eddie Howe is another of the UK betting sites' favourites to become the next England manager. The Newcastle United manager fits the mould in terms of being a young, progressive coach who has achieved a reasonable amount of success at club level.

Howe transformed the fortunes of his beloved AFC Bournemouth and is a hugely popular figure at St James' Park. Since replacing Steve Bruce as manager of Newcastle, the 46-year-old has steered the Tyneside outfit away from the relegation zone, and they are now genuine contenders to qualify for the Champions League each season.

One wouldn't necessarily assume that Howe will want to leave his current club in a hurry. This could be the start of great things to come, and it would be a surprise if England were able to get close to landing someone who could be a perfect fit.

Could Thomas Tuchel Become the Next England Manager?

The FA have recently moved away from hiring foreign managers to take charge of the England national teams. However, it might be that we're about to see the first German manager take this high-pressured role.

Thomas Tuchel is a well-known name in English football after his time in charge of Chelsea. The former Borussia Dortmund coach actually led the Blues to Champions League success after replacing Frank Lampard, although he was sacked shortly into the 2022-23 season after some inconsistent performances convinced the club's new owners to go in a different direction.

Tuchel is available on the market after leaving Bayern Munich at the of the season. However, there are currently more compelling names on the market with most betting sites.

Could Lampard Be an Outside Shot?

Frank Lampard dived into football management shortly after giving up playing, and it has been a mixed bag so far. Lampard enjoyed a successful first season in charge of Derby County and steered the Rams to the Championship play-off final before Aston Villa beat them. Lampard then took over over his beloved Chelsea, and he led them to a Champions League berth in his first season before being replaced after a poor start to the following campaign.

Lampard then had a stint in charge of Everton, where he just about managed to keep them in the Premier League. He also had a second temporary spell in charge of Chelsea after Potter left the role, but that as particularly poor, with one win and eight defeats in 11 matches. However, he does have great cache with England fans having earned 106 caps for the Three Lions. He would be a left-field choice, but perhaps not one to rule out.
