Who is the Next Real Madrid Manager Favourite?

Carlo Ancelotti will become the next head coach of the Brazilian national team, with the Italian taking charge of Real Madrid for one final season before switching to the Selecao. It's a move which has long been touted, with the 64-year-old ready to take on a new assignment in international football.

It means that Real Madrid will now be searching for a replacement for someone who has been highly successful with Los Merengues, with Raul heading the betting for this coveted role. However, there are several high-profile candidates who could be in the running.

Xabi Alonso is a former Real player who could throw his hat into the ring, while Julian Nagelsmann is another potential candidate to take charge, while there's even the possibility that Zinedine Zidane will return after previously experiencing so much success as a manager at the Bernabeu.

Could Real Madrid Icon Raul Gonzalez be Their Next Manager?

Raul is a Real Madrid legend and he’s currently the manager of Real Madrid Castilla, effectively a 'B' team who play in the Spanish Segunda Division. Castilla play their matches at the 6,000-capacity Alfredo di Stefano Stadium, which Real Madrid’s first team previously utilised for the 2020/21 season. It's no surprise to see the 46-year-old trading as one of the favourites for this soon-to-be vacant position.

Raul devoted his playing days to Los Blancos and it’s entirely possible that he will be promoted from within when the role becomes vacant, with the former striker having made 550 appearances, scoring 228 goals for the Spanish club.

The bookies list Raul among the favourites to replace Ancelotti, but it might be regarded as a risk to give the former striker the nod considering that he’s still learning the ropes when it comes to football management. Raul also won’t want to tarnish his reputation considering he is rightly regarded as a club legend.

Xabi Alonso Also Among the Betting Favourites

It could be that Xabi Alonso is among the candidates to be interviewed by Real Madrid over the coming months, with the 41-year-old someone else who represented the Spanish giants during his playing days. Between 2009-14, the Basque made 158 appearances for Real Madrid and he helped them land the La Liga title in the 2011-12 season.

There was also a Champions League success in 2013-14, but Alonso is currently in charge of Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen and he's been relatively successful since taking charge in 2022. Alonso has previously been linked to the Tottenham manager's role although perhaps he will be keen to replace Ancelotti and certainly understands the culture of the club.

This might be seen as a popular appointment by the fans, with the former Liverpool man having been in charge of the Real Sociedad 'B' team between 2019 and 2022 before defecting to Germany. He will now look to be successful with Leverkusen next season and demonstrate that he has the credentials to make the step up.

Nagelsmann Could Be Keen on Landing Real Madrid Role

The new betting sites think that Julian Nagelsmann is another runner to take charge at the Bernabeu, with the German currenty out of work. The German has a strong reputation in European football, enjoying spells with 1899 Hoffenheim between 2016 and 2019 and the team's attacking style of play really put him on the map.

The 35-year-old then went to RB Leipzig and enjoyed another successful spell which encouraged Bayern Munich to hire Nagelsmann, but his reign was a relatively short one and he was dismissed midway through last season. He was replaced by Thomas Tuchel despite the team still being in the Champions League.

Nagelsmann is still very young and perhaps he is the man who can rebuild a Real Madrid squad and prove himself successful at one of the biggest football clubs in the world. The latest odds suggest there is a chance he could replace Carlo Ancelotti.

Could Zidane Return to the Bernabeu?

It would be a sensational story if Zinedine Zidane returned to Real Madrid as their head coach, with the Frenchman having achieved legendary status at the Bernabeu both as a player and manager. Having turned out for Los Merengues between 2001 and 2006 as a player, the midfielder made 155 appearances and scored 37 goals before hanging up his boots.

He then enjoyed two spells as manager at this famous club, overseeing first-team affairs between 2016 and 2018 before returning to take charge between 2019 and 2021. During his two stints, he won the Champions League an incredible three times along with two La Liga titles.

It's possible that Zidane has no further interest in management, with the 51-year-old having only ever managed at the Bernabeu and there was an element of reluctance to take charge on both occasions.

Mourinho Has Previously Won Silverware With Real

Real Madrid supporters have mixed views when it comes to Jose Mourinho, with the 60-year-old having presided over first-team affairs at the Bernabeu between 2010 and 2013. Previously to this, he made his mark with Porto, Chelsea and Inter Milan, although he was unable to guide Los Merengues to European success.

Nevertheless, there was a solitary La Liga success in 2011-12, while there was a Copa del Rey victory in the previous campaign. Following his time at the Spanish capital, Mourinho returned to Chelsea before taking charge at Manchester United. He has been with Serie A club Roma since 2021 winning the Europa Conference League two seasons ago and reaching the Europa League final last season.

It is possibly unlikely that Real Madrid would return for Mourinho considering he's a divisive character but perhaps he can convince the board that he's got the experience to be successful with a talented group of players.

Would Arteta Switch Arsenal for Real Madrid?

Mikel Arteta might be open to leaving Arsenal at the end of the 2023/24 season, with the Spaniard having been a big success at the Emirates Stadium since taking charge in 2019. There have been a few bumps in the road for the 41-year-old, but he led the Gunners on a title charge last season only to be thwarted by Manchester City.

Arteta cut his teeth under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City and is now attempting to win silverware with the Gunners, with the North London side returning to the Champions League next season and they'll compete with Declan Rice and Kai Havertz in their ranks. It could be that Real Madrid make an approach for this manager.

On the flip side, we might see Arteta remain with Arsenal for the time being. He is focused on building a special team at the club and perhaps the lure of Real Madrid isn't strong enough for him at this time.
