The BBC Sports Personality of the Year award is the traditional year-ending awards ceremony celebrating all that has been brilliant in the world of sport throughout the last 12 months. Now that the six contenders have been announced, it's time to check out the latest odds and betting offers on the showpiece event from UK betting sites.

2022 was a successful year for the England Women's football team, as they triumphed in Euro 2022 on home soil. That led to star forward Beth Mead being named Sports Personality of the Year, and this year one of her teammates is topping the billing with most football betting sites in the UK. Indeed, Mary Earps won the Golden Glove award as England made it to the final of this year's World Cup, only to be defeated by Spain. Earps saved a penalty in the final and was inspirational between the sticks.

BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2023 Contenders

The past two winners of the Sports Personality of the Year award have been female, with Emma Raducanu's success in 2021 being followed by England midfielder Beth Mead a year later. It could be that her Lionesses team-mate Mary Earps is now able to claim the 2023 award after a series of excellent performances at the 2023 Women's World Cup. Earps is currently odds-on favourite with most football betting sites.

Stuart Broad made a surprise announcement that he was going to retire from cricket midway through the fifth and final Ashes Test in the summer. The 37-year-old decided to call it a day from all formats of the game a couple of days before he inspired England to victory at the Oval to secure a 2-2 series draw.

Broad managed to hit the last ball he faced for six and take the final wicket of the series and his career in what was a poignant moment for someone who will go down as an all-time great, and he can be found as the second favourite at most cricket betting sites.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson thrilled athletics fans and those further afield with her remarkable gold medal in the heptathlon at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest this summer. Going into the final race - the 800m - Johnson-Thompson had to finish within three seconds of her fierce competitior Anna Hall and only managed to reel her in on the home straight to finish just under two seconds behind and win her second world championship medal.

Frankie Dettori has had a magnificent career and will go down as a legendary jockey, with horse racing betting sites having the Italian's odds for this award available for some time. Although Dettori should technically be in the running for the Overseas Award, it's clear the Italian rider is an honorary Brit, and he's one of the favourites to win the award.

He had stated he was calling time on his racing career at the end of the flat season, but he has now suggested he will race in the US but may never be seen again on jockeying a winner in UK and Irish racing.

Alfie Hewett has had a season for the ages, with two Grand Slam wins at the Australian and US Opens, as well as a run to the final of Wimbledon for the second consecutive year. In all, Hewett has won eight singles Grand Slams and a remarkable 18 doubles Grand Slams in his career, including three of the four on offer in 2023, with just the US Open eluding him. His brilliance has seen his odds available to win the award on tennis betting sites for much of the last couple of months.

The biggest outsider to win the award may be the biggest name in the whole field. People are no strangers to winning money on their golf betting sites with punts on Rory McIlroy, but he is seen as an outlier in the group. He inspired Europe to their remarkable 16½ - 11½ win over the US team at the Marco Simone in Italy. However, it was another year without a Grand Slam despite strong showings in them.
