Sunderland were last season’s Premier League surprise packages. Going into the season, they were favourites for the drop with most betting sites. Sunderland Bottom Half Finish Odds

This is where things get a bit murkier for Sunderland punters because there is very little value in backing them to finish in the bottom half, which may be to be expected. A fast withdrawal betting site is unlikely to have Sunderland odds-against for a bottom-half finish when you can have them as short as 5/2 in some places to be relegated.

Looked at through the context of only having been promoted last season, even a 17th-place finish should still be seen as a positive season, even if others of a red and white persuasion might think otherwise.

This is quite an interesting market if you’re buying Le Bris’ ability to continue to get the best out of his team. Much of Sunderland’s success last season, early on at least, stemmed from making the Stadium of Light a fortress. It wasn’t until February that they were beaten at home, by which point the possibility of relegation was a distant memory.

While the squad has been light on reinforcements so far this season, the job that Le Bris has done with Sunderland makes it difficult to bet against him. If they do indeed finish in the top half again, you could get a nice enough price on it before a ball is kicked.

Sunderland Top 6 Odds

Are the Sunderland faithful ready to trust the team to do even better this season? At around 12/1, there would be plenty of value back if they could. But, equally, they are priced at 12/1 for a reason, you would think. That relative lack of investment in the squad up to this point has to be seen as a red flag.

Hoping lightning will strike twice in the signing of an experienced leader in Thomas Meunier may not necessarily work out as well as Xhaka did. However, there is still time in the transfer window to strengthen the squad and if they can do that, they could very well outplay their odds once again.

Even if a top-six finish when other teams have also spent the entire summer strengthening could slightly fanciful. So long as they finish above Newcastle and remain in the Premier League, we doubt Sunderland fans will mind too much.
