Tip 1 - 1:20 Aintree - Ikarak
Ikarak has shown some excellent progression this season, winning a pair of Class 3 hurdle handicaps to go with a respectable third at Sandown at a grade higher, before most recently coming third in the Pertemps at Cheltenham as a 40/1 outsider. His ability to hang around at this distance is impressive and he looks more than capable of being right up there again in this one.

Tip 2 - 1:55 Aintree - Montemares
Tough to know exactly what sort of prospect Montemares is, but he looked quite smart when winning a Grade 2 at Kelso in February. Was found wanting slightly in a Grade 1 at Kempton in December, but that was only his third rules race, and he looked too keen. Stalked the leaders and then eased to the front towards the end, suggesting that this five-pound rise will be taken in his stride.

Tip 3 - 4:00 Aintree - Champ Kiely
The Grand National has evolved over the years, resulting in classier horses often featuring, as opposed to it being an out and out stamina test. That bodes well for Champ Kiely, who takes a massive step into the unknown as regards the trip. A two-time Grade 1 winner, including a 3m1f success at last year’s Punchestown Festival, he certainly has the class to go close. He’s only ever failed to complete once in his 15 starts over obstacles and that was when slipping on the flat. He looks sure to give backers a good run for their money and could go very close if his stamina holds out.

Tip 4 - 5:00 Aintree - Bass Hunter
Bass Hunter seems to have one way of running and that’s by blazing off in front. Those tactics paid off in weaker bumpers earlier in the season at Newbury and Ascot and very nearly did at Cheltenham too. He led all the way to the furlong pole before finishing a close third. On this sharper track, his running style could pay dividends and he may prove too hard to peg back.

What is the Staking Plan and How Does a 1pt Win System Work?
We advise each bet as a win single or sometimes as an each way single. You can of course choose to combine the selections in a multiple bet, a Lucky 15 or a Yankee etc and that is a very popular way to follow the horses selected in this column daily.
A 1pt win per horse is advised in general and that means whatever your normal stake is for a bet is used as a point. For many this is £1 and for some this is £10 or more but it is totally relative to the individual and shouldn’t be more than you can afford to lose at any time.
For each way selections we advise a 0.5pt each way stake. So as with the win selections this would be a £1 total bet (50 pence each way) or a £10 total bet (£5 each way).
