Got off the mark at the 17th time of asking here last month, winning handsomely. Then was beaten a short head when favourite at Southwell before a poor defeat over course and distance last time out. Jockey suggested the horse hung badly right, giving up any chances of a win. Even with that, he only finished three lengths back to suggest the speed is still there. A straight run at things could be all he needs. Jude Fernandes taking seven off is also going to be helpful.

Tip 2 - 3:45 Musselburgh - Vaguely Royale

Vaguely Royal has crept up the weights in recent weeks having won handicaps at Chester and York. Despite his latest four pound rise, he could still be nicely treated on his old form. He’s won off marks in the high 80’s in the past and placed a couple of times while rated in the 90’s. He’s certainly not the force of old, but there may well be some wiggle room off his current rating.

Musical Soldier has won his last two outings, with the most recent coming over course and distance, and appears to have found his perfect distance this year. His debut season in 2025 amounted to very little and he was finally switched to 7f in May where he won on his first try, and his overall form over 7f reads 1522211. He has won on both turf and all-weather and still won here despite having to deal with an effective 8lb rise last time out, so an extra 1lb doesn’t feel enough to stop him.

What is the Staking Plan and How Does a 1pt Win System Work?

We advise each bet as a win single or sometimes as an each way single. You can of course choose to combine the selections in a multiple bet, a Lucky 15 or a Yankee etc and that is a very popular way to follow the horses selected in this column daily.

A 1pt win per horse is advised in general and that means whatever your normal stake is for a bet is used as a point. For many this is £1 and for some this is £10 or more but it is totally relative to the individual and shouldn’t be more than you can afford to lose at any time.

For each way selections we advise a 0.5pt each way stake. So as with the win selections this would be a £1 total bet (50 pence each way) or a £10 total bet (£5 each way).
