The Atlanta Hawks acquired Dejounte Murray two seasons ago to pair him with Trae Young for a formidable backcourt. But the wins haven’t come to fruition.

After a 41-41 record and first-round exit in the playoffs in 2022-23, the team fell to 36-46 this past season and missed the playoffs entirely. Now the Hawks are thinking about blowing it up and starting over.

Murray and Young are each reportedly on the trade block this off-season. Bookies.com veteran oddsmaker Adam Thompson has revealed his sports betting next team odds for the seven-year point guard.

Possible Next Team Prospects

Murray had a breakout season with the San Antonio Spurs in 2021-22, averaging 21.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 9.2 assists and garnering a spot in the All-Star Game. The Spurs sent him to Atlanta for a package of first-round picks.

While Murray’s points remained pretty stable in Atlanta, his rebounds, assists, and steals numbers have plummeted. Perhaps that’s due to playing with a ball-dominant guard such as Young. What’s more concerning is how the two didn’t mesh across the board: Atlanta was outscored by 6.3 points per 100 possessions with Murray or Young on the floor and had a positive net gain when both were sitting.

The Hawks won the NBA Draft Lottery, so now could be the time for a reboot in Atlanta. While Young seems to be the first option to get moved, potential trade partners reportedly prefer Young. He’s younger and is locked up through 2027-28 for roughly half the cost.

Many teams could use perimeter shooting help, and Murray has no say on where he gets traded. The Hawks probably won’t move him to a divisional rival such as the Orlando Magic or Charlotte Hornets, though those two teams may need perimeter shooting more than any other squad.

The Chicago Bulls were near the bottom and have money to spend with DeMar DeRozan now a free agent. The Minnesota Timberwolves could prioritize offense in the trade market to find another scorer to play alongside Anthony Edwards. Murray could play point guard for the Wolves.

Depending on how free agency and the draft go, the Los Angeles Lakers and Sacramento Kings could seek SG help. L.A. likely would see Murray as a final piece of the puzzle, while the Kings have their own free agents to lock up.

The Detroit Pistons, Memphis Grizzlies, and even the Denver Nuggets could be on the search for outside scoring, though only Detroit can afford him straight-up.
