Few players in college hoops have improved their draft status more than Purdue’s Jaden Ivey over the past 12 months. The 6-foot-4, 195-pound guard out of South Bend, Indiana showed plenty of potential last season and earned Big Ten All-Freshman honors after averaging 11.1 points and 3.3 rebounds. The leap Ivey took this season now has him among the most talked-about NBA prospects in the country.

Ivey is big enough at 6-4 and plays like a much smaller guard. He’s lightning quick off the dribble and can get to the rack in a hurry, which pro teams love to see.

It looks like Ivey could be the first guard taken in the 2022 NBA Draft after a stellar sophomore season with the Boilermakers. Ivey averaged 17.6 points and 4.8 rebounds, shooting 36.4% from deep. He helped lead Purdue to a second-place finish in conference during the regular season as the Boilermakers earned a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the Sweet 16 of March Madness with a win over Texas.

The NBA betting odds suggest Ivey has now positioned himself as a Lottery pick for the upcoming draft, with a very promising pro future after two memorable years in West Lafayette.

Moving to the Motor City?

Looking at the top contenders to land Ivey, he likely won’t be around for long. We know that Ivey is probably the top guard prospect in the draft and in ideal shape for a top-five pick – it doesn’t hurt his chances that the 2022 class is loaded with top big men like Chet Holmgren, Jabari Smith, Keegan Murray and Paolo Banchero.

The Pistons and Thunder are both in need of backcourt help and will be in line for a top-four pick. We’ve listed them as the co-favorites to land Ivey with NBA odds of +500 apiece. Detroit might see an opportunity to lock up its backcourt for the next six or seven years and take him to complement star guard Cade Cunningham.

The Pistons have also used three of their last five picks on Big Ten prospects.

Oklahoma City is another likely landing spot. The Thunder have three first-round picks this year and while size is a priority, there’s gonna be a lot of talented bigs available. There won’t be many guards like Ivey, so the Thunder could jump at the chance and add length with their other first-round selections.

The Rockets (+600) are also in desperate need of a point guard and would likely jump at the chance to take Ivey with a top-five pick.

Other NBA Contenders For Ivey

If the dominos fall a little differently in the coming months, the Magic, Pacers and Kings would be the next-likely group of contenders. The Magic (+900) are stuck in the NBA basement and would love to inject some energy in the franchise with a high-profile draft pick.

The Pacers (+1000) would seem like a great fit geographically – Ivey was born and raised in Indiana and starred at Marian High School in Mishawaka, roughly 2.5 hours north of downtown Indianapolis. The question is whether he’ll still be around depending on the Pacers’ position.

Same goes for Sacramento (+1200). The Kings are happy with point guard De’Aron Fox, but this is the NBA and long-term plans can change quickly. Adding Ivey to the fold with create some concerns about minutes, but it would add serious insurance and talent to an intriguing, young backcourt.
