Four operators given the green light by the New York State Gaming Commission launched mobile operations at 9 a.m. ET on Saturday, Jan. 8. Caesars Sportsbook New York, FanDuel New York, DraftKings New York and Rush Street Interactive’s BetRivers brand were the first platforms to satisfy all statutory and regulatory requirements necessary to accept and process mobile sports wagers in the Empire State.
Although the gaming commission in November awarded nine licenses to entities that would offer online sportsbooks and sports betting apps in New York, five have not yet satisfied all requirements necessary for launch. Resorts World, PointsBet, WynnBET, Bally Bet and BetMGM New York will be approved on a rolling basis when requirements are met, according to the commission.

Regardless, it’s a landmark moment for a state that legalized retail sports betting in April of 2021. In November, the state settled on a framework for mobile gaming that included 10-year licenses for operators and a tax rate of 51 percent on revenue - well above the median U.S. sports betting tax rate of 11 percent, according to Forbes, and tying New Hampshire for highest in the nation.
The mobile launch in New York is also the state’s first attempt to stem the flood of bettors who cross the border into neighboring New Jersey, where mobile betting has been legal since 2018 and brings in billions of dollars a year in handle. Mobile betting in the Empire State also launches just in time for NFL betting for Week 18, the playoffs and Super Bowl 56, which is one of the most heavily-bet sporting events in the U.S.
New York becomes the 15th state with mobile sports wagering, which has proven immensely popular among bettors. In those states where the practice is legal, sportsbooks typically take 90% of wagers or more through mobile or online platforms.
