Mac Jones had all the sophomore jinxes.

The second season in the NFL for New England’s quarterback was a mess. His passing numbers slipped. His progress was stunted. His attitude went full angry teenager. He was booed and benched at home. His name continues to be subject of trade rumors and speculation on NFL betting markets and elsewhere.

Jones was seen as a strong bet to go over his 2022 preseason totals in terms of yards passing and TDs on betting apps, and to keep things under the mark for interceptions.

But Jones lost the guiding hand of Josh McDaniels and suffered – along with the rest of the Patriots, their fans, and New England bettors – through a year of offensive mismanagement at the hands of Matt Patricia and the hidden hand of Bill Belichick

One unnamed Patriots player went so far as to tell the Boston Herald that “Belichick (bleeped) us” in regard to how the offense operated.

Owner Robert Kraft reached his limit of mediocrity and coerced or demanded that Belichick bring in a legitimate offensive coordinator ahead of 2023. Bill O’Brien will oversee the Patriots offense. He coached Jones at Alabama and had a similar role with the Patriots and Tom Brady earlier this century.

From March 10, Massachusetts betting apps will go live - but legal sportsbooks across the nation have yet to set full-season totals for NFL players. That should change in the coming months but you likely won’t see those numbers until the end of free agency.

Multiple QBs are expected to be on new teams next season. Tom Brady has retired, likely for good. And Aaron Rodgers is still seeking his Zen. Regardless, when those prop markets appear on Massachusetts betting sites, we want you to be prepared with your best bets and picks.

That's why we have projected our lines for Jones' key props ahead of the March 10 go-live date for online Massachusetts sports betting. From that day, Massachusetts bettors will be able to legally wager from their phones at a number of sportsbooks, including DraftKings, BetMGM and Caesars.

At least initially, the main NFL market available will be Super Bowl 58 winner (the Patriots are around +6000 right now). But that should change, and you'll be seeing these Jones' markets by the summer.

What To Expect From Mac Jones In 2023

While Jones may have the OC he needs, he could well be down his most productive target from 2022. Jakobi Meyers led the Patriots with 804 yards receiving and 6 TDs last season. Meyers, 26, is a free agent. He was second in catches on the Patriots behind running back Rhamondre Stevenson

The fifth-year wide receiver is the latest in a long line of undrafted players turned into stars by Belichick. Most of them left once their low-money contracts were exhausted.

“I'm not the biggest Mac fan in the world, but it was obvious that the Patriots placed him in a horrible position to succeed by changing the offense and aligning him with an offensive coordinator that never called offensive plays. It was a disaster,” said NESN betting analyst Sam Panayotovich. “New coordinator Bill O'Brien calling the shots should certainly improve the offensive flow and keep opposing defenses on their heels. Look for Mac to take more shots downfield and to utilize his tight ends more inside the red zone.”

It's clear Jones was limited last year in the chances he took both downfield and in the red zone. His outbursts and defiance of the offensive calls by whomever was making them was visible to see for anyone watching the Patriots in 2022.

“His TD passing number was O/U 22.5 last year and I'll be ready to go 'over' anything similar in 2023,” Panayotovich said.

Jones was +3330 to win the NFL passing title last season. Never a realistic possibility. His per-game average passing yards projected total was 222. He would average 214.1 YPG passing and went over the 222 average seven times on the year.

The 8-9 Patriots missed the playoffs and whiffed on their win total last season. It opened at 8.5 and was eventually pushed up to 9. New England was +140 to make the playoffs and -160 to miss the postseason at DraftKings before the 2022 season.

The Patriots were +4000 to win the Super Bowl, +2000 to win the AFC and +450 to take the AFC East when the 2022 season began.

Their price is lower heading into 2023. New England is +6000 to win Super Bowl 58 and +3000 to reach The Big Game as champs of the AFC.
