College Football Week 5 Best Bets

Friday, Sept. 27
Virginia Tech at (8) Miami, 7:30 p.m. (ESPN)
Buzz: The "U" is feeling it this season. Mario Cristobal's Hurricanes blew out Florida in Week 1 and haven't looked back. Cam Ward is an NFL-caliber QB who has the benefit of a stellar offensive line. Miami needs to run the table in the ACC to ensure a spot in the conference title game. And a lofty-seed and possible bye in the college football playoffs. Hard Rock Stadium will be lit on a Friday night. And the 'Canes should score another decisive win and cover. We jumped on this line when it opened and locked in at Miami -14. It blew up to 17.5 points after the Hokies lost to Rutgers. (Who does that?) Regardless, the 'Canes need to keep winning big to maintain their lofty spot in the polls.
Pick: Miami -14 (-115 DraftKings)
Saturday, September 28
Colorado at UCF, 3:30 p.m. (FOX)
Buzz: The Golden Knights have impressed this season. They want respect and hope to make a splash in the Big 12. We're not sure how well the Buffaloes will fare traveling east and playing in the heat and humidity of the radar-range that is FBC Mortgage Stadium. Colorado is coming off a wild win at home over Baylor. The home crowds in Orlando can surprise with their volume. This game set for a 3:30 p.m. kick - right in the high heat (and possible rain) of an early fall Central Florida afternoon. This is UCF's College Football Playoff game.
Pick: UCF -14.5 (-115 DraftKings)

(21) Oklahoma at Auburn, 3:30 p.m. (ESPN)
Buzz: The Sooners head east after a big-time clash and close-call loss to Tennessee. This should be a get-right, or at least at bit of a less-intense, game for the Sooners. The Tigers are a home dog here. As they should be. Oklahoma will likely have a new QB this week in Michael Hawkins (at least a for few snaps) and needs an SEC win. They'll get it.
Pick: Oklahoma -3 (-115 DraftKings)
(19) Illinois at (9) Penn State, 7:30 p.m. (NBC)
Buzz: A B1G clash that offers another test for the upstart Illini. Penn State has an 86.4% to win this game, according to the ESPN FPI. But the Illini are tough out, beating Nebraska on the road Friday night as 8-point underdogs. Both teams are unbeaten. Penn State's defensive front could allow Illinois to run the ball and keep this one close.
Pick: Illinois +17.5 (-115 DraftKings)
(2) Georgia at (4) Alabama, 7:30 p.m. (ABC)
Buzz: The Game Of The Year. Thus far. Once upon a time, CBS would build its SEC season schedule around this game. Now, Georgia and Alabama play in prime time on ABC. ESPN's FPI give a sizable edge to the Tide at 65.8%. Both teams march in Bryant Denny Stadium coming off a bye week. No doubt Kirby Smart's defense has been brainwashed with game film on Jalen Milroe. But it's Georgia's offensive line that caused major problems in the 13-12 win at Kentucky. A game in which UGA was a 24.5-point favorite. This time, Smart is facing a first-year coach in Kalen DeBoer and not his mentor Nick Saban. Georgia's OL has an extra week to adjust to the loss of Tate Ratledge. Meanwhile, the Tide rolled through Wisconsin in Week 3. Carson Beck needs a running game to get going. That's gonna be tough here. It's hard to go against the Tide at home getting points.
Pick: Alabama +2 (-110 DraftKings)
Arizona at (10) Utah, 10:15 p.m. (ESPN)
Buzz: The Wildcats had a bye week to lick their wounds and recover from the beat-down they suffered at the hands of Kansas State in Week 3. Noah Fifita has been serviceable in his first year as QB for the Wildcats. WR Tetairoa McMillan is NFL material. But the rest of the Wildcats offensive line has underwhelmed. And this type of game against a deeper and stronger opponent could be trouble. The Utes beat Oklahoma State in Stillwater Saturday. Impressive.
Pick: Utah -12.5 (-110 DraftKings)
