Frances Tiafoe vs Ben Shelton

The all-American showdown between Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton should be a cracking match, made all the more scintillating because they’ve never crossed paths at a tournament and it’s a veritable tabula rasa between them.

Tiafoe is one win away from reaching the semifinals— matching his best result at the US Open which he achieved last year— and across the betting apps, he’s favored to accomplish the feat at the expense of his 20-year-old compatriot.

But Tiafoe traipses into the quarterfinals with nary a challenge, thanks to an easy draw that pit him against two wild cards (Learner Tien and Rinky Hijikata), the No. 58 Sebastian Ofner and the No. 35 Adrian Mannarino. Hardly a ringing endorsement.

What’s more, Tiafoe’s form was questionable coming into the tournament as he won just one of his three matches on the American summer hard court season.

There’s reason enough, therefore, to consider Ben Shelton’s odds to pull off the upset. Especially after the impressive manner with which he dismissed fellow countryman Tommy Paul in the R16, 6-4, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.  He showed poise and maturity that belied his years and experience.

In addition, Shelton leads the men’s field in aces and has dropped two of the biggest serves of the tournament at 147 MPH and 149 MPH in his last two matches.

Make no mistake, Tiafoe is going to be a tough nut to crack. But Shelton is a prodigal talent and arguably the future and present of American tennis, rolled into one.

Taylor Fritz vs Novak Djokovic

Taylor Fritz faces an impossible task in his bid to reach his first-ever major semi-final, with a date against Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals. Simply put, it doesn’t get any tougher than a match against the 23-time grand slam champion – and well he knows it.

Yes, Fritz reaches this stage of the tournament without dropping a set, and prior to his R16 clash against Dominic Stricker—his toughest match yet—he’d lost just 13 games.

But the draw opened up for him nicely, pitting him against wild card Steve Johnson, No. 74 Juan Pablo Varillas, qualifier Jakub Mensik and then qualifier Dominic Stricker.  It’s been a cakewalk through the first four rounds—let’s face it.

Fritz has never beaten the 36-year-old Serb, losing all previous seven encounters. He’s also only managed to take two of the 17 sets they’ve played.

Most recently, Fritz suffered a sobering 6-0, 6-4 loss to Djokovic in the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Open—a tournament Djokovic went on to win.

Arguably, taking everything into consideration – Djokovic’ supremacy, the head-to-head series and their last meeting, too— it’s no surprise to see Fritz being spotted a 6.5 games handicap and priced, at the same time, as a big underdog to pull off the unthinkable upset over Djokovic.

Anything is possible in tennis, even the seemingly impossible. Nevertheless, it’s going to take a bold bettor to back the top-ranked American to beat Djokovic even with these kinds of tempting prices on hand.

Coco Gauff vs Jelena Ostapenko

Coco Gauff has gone the distance in three of her four matches and she’s likely to face another similar test from Jelena Ostapenko, who has gone the distance in all of her matches so far, including a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 upset over World No. 1 and defending champion Iga Swiatek.

The head-to-head series between these two players is delicately poised on a 1-1 tie, with Ostapenko winning 7-5, 6-3 in their most recent meeting in the R16 of the 2023 Australian Open.

Punters can consider the American teen to come through on her favorable odds, especially as she’ll have the raucous crowd in Arthur Ashe Stadium firmly behind her. But Ostapenko can’t be dismissed out of hand and she is a nice price to pull off the upset with odds ranging from +200 to +210 depending on your preferred trusted sportsbook.

Whichever way you are slicing this match on your betting slip, it has all the hallmarks of going the distance between a couple of big hitters who aren’t afraid of the limelight.

Karolina Muchova vs Sorana Cirstea

Karolina Muchova edged a gutsy Xinyu Zheng 6-3,  5-7, 6-1 to book her place in the quarterfinals. She is now two wins away from reaching a second grand slam final this season after making her maiden appearance in Roland Garros.

Standing in Muchova’s way is surprise quarterfinalist Sorana Cirstea. The 33-year-old Romanian served up back-to-back upsets over Elena Rybakina and Belinda Bencic in the last two rounds and she can’t be underestimated as a result.

These two players have gone head-to-head four times since 2020 – all of which have been on hard courts – and twice this season, although Muchova leads the overall series 3-1.

That said, they crossed paths in Montreal last month – a R32 contest that went the way of the 27-year-old Czech 7-5, 6-4.  Before that, Cirstea won the first meeting of the season between them in Miami when she beat Muchova 7-5, 6-1.

All that is in the past, though, and the stakes are much bigger now with a spot in the US Open semifinals on the line. Muchova has some impressive recent form behind her, having reached the R16 in Montreal and the Cincinnati Open final. Back her to overcome Cirstea and reach a Slam semifinal again.

US Open Best Bet: Muchova to win at -165 (ML) at BetMGM
