The long-rumored title unification bout between IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr and WBC champion Shawn Porter appears to be on its way to being officially announced soon. According to The Athletic, the pay-per-view battle could take place at Barclays in Brooklyn sometime in September.

Should the fight happen as expected, Spence is a big favorite to unify. At the open, Spence is a 3/10 favorite according to London-based bookmaker PaddyPower while Porter follows as the 5/2 underdog.

The outcome may not be doubtful, but it'll still be a fun matchup for fans of boxing betting to take note of.

Spence Coming Off Biggest Win of Career

Spence, 29, from DeSoto, Texas., is coming off the biggest win of his professional career, a 12-round domination of four-division champion Mikey Garcia in March at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

Spence, the undefeated welterweight star, made beating Garcia look easy. The Texan won just about every single minute of every round and proved he’s one of the most elite boxers in the world today.

Against Porter, Spence will take on one of the toughest 147-pound fighters in the world. It’s an important fight for his continued development, because as talented and accomplished the fighter is, Spence hasn’t really been able to lure other top welterweights to the ring.

Garcia was basically a lightweight moving up two weight classes, so now it’s time to see how Spence fares against a legitimate welterweight champ.

Porter’s Gameplan All Kinds of Wrong in Last Fight

Porter, 31, from Akon, Ohio, is an aggressive stalker who uses what some hail as a crude style but one that’s very effective. Porter is trained by his father, Kenny Porter, who obviously has a very close relationship with his son but also might not have a wealth of experience as an elite-level cornerman.

That seems important right now because what Porter does best as a fighter is make fights rough and outmuscle people, but he doesn’t always seem ready to do that. Porter has a powerful jab, one that he throws to land pretty much anywhere, and when he’s willing to get into an opponent’s chest to dig to the body he’s very effective.

The knock on Porter is that in some fights he seems to forget what got him to the top in the first place. Against Cuban southpaw Yordenis Ugas, for instance, Porter wasn’t his usual aggressive self.

It’s almost like he and his trainer outsmarted themselves by trying to outbox a crafty boxer. Porter escaped with the decision win, but not everyone was convinced he deserved it.

To beat Spence, Porter will have to go back to doing what Porter does best. To put it plainly, things can’t look pretty if Porter hopes to pull the big upset.
