Daniil Medvedev vs Attila Balazs

Medvedev, once considered among the best hard-court players, picked up his maiden major title by defeating Novak Djokovic in the 2021 US Open final. But success at the grand slams has eluded him since, and now he is somewhat of a forgotten man. That is being, like many players of his generation, eclipsed by the Spanish phenom Carlos Alcaraz.

Moreover, Medvedev’s case to win a second US Open title isn’t helped by the fact that he’s fallen into Alcaraz’s half of the draw, which puts him on a course to meet the 20-year-old Spaniard in the semifinals.

Indeed, it’s precisely for this reason that most US-facing sportsbooks, including DraftKings and BetMGM, are tipping him at +1000 odds – odds that are almost 10x greater than Djokovic (+110 at BetMGM) and Alcaraz (+130 at FanDuel).

Nevertheless, to Medvedev’s advantage, he has a very comfortable (on paper) matchup against Attila Balazs – a 34-year-old journeyman who will be playing only in his second ATP Tour-level match of the season. Talk about a total mismatch.

Jannik Sinner vs Yannick Hanfmanm

Sinner is coming off a maiden Masters triumph in Toronto to claim his second title of the season after a victorious run in Montpellier (hard). While the 22-year-old Italian crashed out of the ensuing Cincinnati Masters, losing his tournament opener against Dusan Lajovic, the added week of rest should work to his advantage going into New York.

Indeed, Sinner is the dark horse of the tournament at +1300 to win the title as per DraftKings. He begins his bid for the US Open title against Yannick Hanfmann in the first round – a journeyman player that favors clay over any other surface. Hanfmann won’t be an easy out, but Sinner should have more weapons in his arsenal to take him out in straight sets.

US Open Best Bet: Sinner to win in straight sets (3-0) -188 at bet365

Michael Mmoh vs Karen Khachanov

Michael Mmoh and Karen Khachanov are set to collide in an intriguing first-round contest. Under most circumstances, Khachanov, a semi-finalist at last year’s US Open, would be a much stronger favorite versus Mmoh than his current odds of -175 (or thereabouts depending on your preferred sportsbook) would suggest. But going against the Russian is a lack of match fitness and tournament play, after missing almost three months since the French Open due to injury.

Recently, Khachanov played a couple of doubles matches in Cincinnati. Whether that will be enough preparation, remains to be seen. Never mind the pressure that comes with having to defend all those points he picked up from last year’s run into the final four.

For Mmoh, this is an amazing opportunity to notch another win against a top player. This season, the American recorded wins over Alexander Zverev (Australian Open), Denis Shapovalov (Delray Beach), Felix Auger-Aliassime (Wimbledon) and Hubert Hurkacz (Washington) Beating an out-of-form and rusty Khachanov wouldn’t be beyond the realm of possibility, especially considering the partisan crowd that will be firmly behind him.

Carlos Alcaraz vs Dominik Koepfer

All eyes will be on Carlos Alcaraz as he begins his title defense campaign against Germany’s Dominik Koepfer. The 29-year-old German is outmatched by Alcaraz in every sense, but he should be up for this clash nonetheless.

Coupled with the fact that defending a major title is uncharted territory for the 20-year-old Spaniard, this match could be trickier than the tennis odds would suggest.

US Open Best Bet: Over 27.5 -135 at Caesars

Camilla Giorgi vs Jessica Pegula

American Jessica Pegula set herself up as a legitimate challenger for the US Open title by capturing her second career WTA 1000 title in Canada earlier this month. However, she’s getting no favors in the draw with a first-round clash against dangerous floater Camilla Giorgi.

The mercurial Italian blows hot and cold from tournament to tournament, but when she’s on, she’s a tough competitor. Pegula owns the 8-2 edge in their series, but five of their last eight matches went to three sets, including three of their last four.

US Open Best Bet: Giorgi +5.5 -135 at DraftKings

Ons Jabeur vs Camilla Osorio

Since the heartbreaking loss to Marketa Vondrousova in the 2023 Wimbledon final, Ons Jabeur has competed in only one tournament – the Cincinnati Open – where she reached the quarterfinals (l. to Sabalenka).

In most cases, limited match play would be cause for concern. But not with the Tunisian trailblazer, who knows how to work her way into form over the course of a tournament. Besides, if her Wimbledon defeat was as she said “the worst loss of her career,” she probably needed the rest to recover and regroup.

Fortunately, her opener against Camilla Osorio is exactly the kind of match that should help her ease into the tournament nicely. Expect Jabeur to win comfortably.

US Open Best Bet: Jabeur -5.5 -110 at BetMGM

Venus Williams vs Greet Minnen

Qualifier Greet Minnen of Belgium will face seven-time major champion Venus Williams in Arthur Ashe Stadium, as the pair kickstart primetime play on Tuesday night.

Yes, Williams, at 49 years of age, has seen her heyday come and go. But her resume, the sheer size of the stadium, the primetime slot and the partisan crowd cheering for the legendary Venus is all together a daunting prospect, one that could be overwhelming for Minnen.

Aryna Sabalenka vs Maryna Zanevska

Sabalenka, the 2023 Australian Open champion, opens her bid for a second career major title against an off-form Maryna Zanevska, who arrives in New York with a 9-15 record on the season and is riding a six-match (main draw) losing streak.

The gap in quality, talent and form between this pair is vast. Thus, expect Sabalenka to get off to a scorching start as she underscores her betting value as the second favorite (+500 with FanDuel) to win the US Open title.

US Open Best Bet: Sabalenka -7.5 -105 at FanDuel
