After a long, dark stretch of time in which bettors resorted to marble races and video game simulations, sports wagering is back like never before. As if the NFL, college football, Stanley Cup Finals and NBA Playoffs weren’t enough, major golf has arrived at a classic track.

The U.S. Open finally gets underway this week at Winged Foot in what should be a throwback national championship. The rough looks long and nasty, and players say they’ll be shocked if the winning score is under par. This is a big ballpark that will take plenty of power to navigate off the tee, but missing fairways looks like a recipe for disaster.

Dustin Johnson is the golf betting favorite at +850 after securing the Tour Championship and ensuing $15 million bonus to cap the 2019-20 season. Jon Rahm is +900 in the latest U.S. Open betting odds, having picked up two wins since the restart. Justin Thomas is third at +1400 while Tiger Woods is a down the board and even with Justin Rose at +4500.

Phil Mickelson (-122) Over Jordan Spieth

We made this exact same bet last week at the Safeway Open, with identical odds, and cashed easily. Spieth missed the cut by four shots and Mickelson logged a ho-hum T-41. We’ll gladly take those odds again at the track where Mickelson suffered the most excruciating of his six(!) runner-up finishes at the U.S. Open.

Both guys struggle to keep it in the fairway, but Mickelson is working with a superior skill set throughout the bag right now. He could make a push with a good driving week, while we just don’t see any way Spieth shows up at such a difficult course against such a strong field right now. Find the best odds at FanDuel.

Bubba Watson To Miss The Cut (+104)

We’re jumping all over this one with odds near even money. Watson has been playing alright lately, but his recent U.S. Open track record is brutal. He’s missed the cut five of the last six years, including three straight. It takes serious mental toughness and focus to contend at a U.S. Open, and Watson isn’t exactly known for those qualities. He’s also erratic off the tee and outside the top 100 in scrambling, which will be more important this week. We’ll be shocked if Watson has a Saturday tee time. Find the best odds at FanDuel.

Brendon Todd (-125) Over Brian Harman

The “Toddfather” continues to impress. He showed up for the three toughest tournaments of the season so far – he was T-22 at the Memorial Tournament, T-17 at the PGA Championship and T-8 at the BMW. Harman has fared much better at the easier courses, and Winged Foot ain’t easy.

Both of these guys are relatively short hitters, but Todd finished fourth in accuracy off the tee last season. That’s hugely important this week. Todd keeps it rolling and wins this matchup handily. Grab this bet with Unibet.

Jason Day (-125) Over Billy Horschel

Day’s stellar short game and scrambling ability has him near the top of the favorites list. We’re on board with that. He’s also an excellent putter and these greens will be nasty all week. And he’s been a great U.S. Open player with a remarkable five top-10 finishes, including two-runner ups, in just nine career starts.

That T-4 at the PGA Championship indicates Day is trending back in the right direction and ready to start consistently contending in majors again, as he did for much of the past decade. Horschel is outside the top 150 in scrambling and that will be a killer this week. Day gets it done. Bet on it with DraftKings.

Tiger Woods Over Rickie Fowler

This is more of a Fowler fade than a Woods play, but we’ll roll the dice on the three-time U.S. Open champion. Few have expressed confidence in his chances this week, and we get it. He’s missed the cut by a mile at really challenging courses of late, such as the 2018 U.S. Open at Shinnecock and the 2019 PGA Championship at Bethpage Black.

And he hasn’t played great since winning the ZoZo Championship last fall. But even money against Fowler is a decent play. Fowler is still struggling to post results after a recent swing change, missing four of eight cuts since the restart. He’s having an especially hard time on the difficult tracks, missing the cut at the Honda Classic, Memorial Tournament and PGA Championship this season. We don’t expect Fowler to make any noise this week and think there’s a chance Woods plays his way into the top 25. Bet on it at DraftKings.
