Burnley, as has been the way of things in recent seasons, came straight back up from the Championship last season having relegated the campaign before. After posting a historically sound defence in the second tier, confidence was a little higher this year the Clarets would be able to compete this time around.

While they have competed all season, it hasn’t been enough, and their relegation was confirmed at the weekend with four games of the season to go. That led to speculation that manager Scott Parker could be on the move. That has now been confirmed with four pages left in the season, as Parker has left the club by mutual consent.

Top football betting sites have opened a new market on who might replace Parker now he has left. As you might imagine, there are number of familiar names on the market at the best betting sites.

The surprise name at the top of the betting at present is Steven Gerrard, followed by former team-mate and current Wales boss Craig Bellamy. Given Gerrard had been odds-on at some fast withdrawal betting sites even before Parker's departure, a decision appeared to be imminent. The Burnley hierarchy may be hoping for a similar transformative impact on Gerrard's managerial reputation as seen with Frank Lampard at Coventry. There is a sense that Gerrard is the man in waiting, with an announcement perhaps not set to come until the season is over.

There have been reports that the team have also checked in on the availability of Craig Bellamy and Brian Barry-Murphy. How easily the Welsh FA would allow Bellamy to leave is another matter, while Barry-Murphy has just got Cardiff promoted from League One and may also be reluctant.

Steven Gerrad Could Be Ready For Management Return

Steven Gerrard’s managerial career seemed to be on an unstoppable path after taking over at a Rangers team that was still adapting to life back in the top-flight. He needed just three seasons to lead them to a first Scottish title in a decade and going unbeaten along the way.

He soon left for a Premier League job in Aston Villa, but despite starting positively, things quickly turned sour and he was dismissed after little under a year in charge. He then spent 18 months at Saudi Pro League team Al-Ettifaq before leaving by mutual consent in January last year. After cutting his teeth as a pundit since then, perhaps the allure of returning to management with a point to prove will be too great for the Liverpool legend to reject.

Would Bellamy Swap Wales for Burnley?

Having never held a permanent position as a club manager, it would be a serious gamble for Burnley to appoint Craig Bellamy as manager, despite him doing about as well as can be expected with the Welsh National team, where he only lost four of his 18 games in charge.

However, the best chance a relegated side has of getting back into the Premier League is that first season in the Championship. There are probably safer pairs of hands out there Burnley can turn to with more experience on their CV. In fact, you would have that sticking with Parker would have been a better option.

Would Solskjaer Return in Championship?

Solskjaer has been without a job since last August, having been sacked by Besiktas. He has the kind of profile that may appeal to a team like Burnley, having managed sides with European aspirations and knowing the English game very well. Indeed, he spent most of his playing career and three years as a manager at Manchester United.

He’s clearly keen to return to work, after reportedly putting himself forward for the interim job at Old Trafford that ultimately went to Michael Carrick. A big name who’s available could be hard for Burnley to turn down, and he’s sure to be popular with punters on UK betting apps.

Thomas Frank Among Favourites

Before the start of this season, the thought of Thomas Frank taking a job in the Championship would have been unthinkable. After all, he had taken Brentford from the Championship to an established Premier League team before moving on to what was supposed to be his big break with Tottenham.

Things didn’t pan out well for the Dane as he was relieved of his duties at Spurs in February after a poor run had the fans turning on him. However, the club haven’t exactly done any better in his absence, so his reputation remains largely intact. Whether he fancies trying to establish Burnley like he did with Brentford remains the key question.
