The bookmakers have suspended their Premier League Sack Race betting market after it emerged that Paul Heckingbottom would be relieved of his duties at Sheffield United.

A 5-0 humiliation at the hands of previous bottom club Burnley appears to be the final straw, with Chris Wilder now the favourite to return to Bramall Lane for a second stint. He's previously achieved great things with the club, having steered them from League One to the top flight.

Neil Warnock, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Graham Potter are some of the other betting favourites for the role, although it's possible that talks have already taken place with Wilder.

The Yorkshire outfit are currently set to return to the Championship based on their performances so far, although a change of manager could clearly see an upturn in fortunes, and most betting sites seem sure that Heckingbottom will be given his marching orders by the Blades.

There had been rumours earlier this season that Chris Wilder might be making a return to a club he originally helped to secure a double promotion and the football betting sites seem to echo that thought process.

The Next Sheffield United Manager Betting Odds

The best bookies might well be putting together a next Sheffield United manager betting market. Paul Heckingbottom remains in charge for now, with the former Leeds United manager having been promoted from the Blades under-23s to become the new first team head coach in 2021.

Heckingbottom steered United to second place in the Championship last season, but he was slow to be backed in the transfer market, and the Yorkshire outfit are rock bottom of the Premier League with just five points from 14 games.

Chris Wilder is currently a free agent and is likely to be one of the betting app favourites to replace Heckingbottom and make an emotional return to the club. There could be other candidates in the running including Danny Cowley and Nathan Jones.

Would Wilder Make a Sheffield United Return?

It was reported in September that Chris Wilder had been sounded out about potentially returning to Sheffield United as manager. The fact that Paul Heckingbottom is trading at odds-on in the Sack Race market with most new betting sites implies Wilder could be one of the names in the frame in the next few days.

Wilder was in charge of the Blades between 2016 and 2021, earning rave reviews for the way in which he engineered a promotion from League One to the Championship. Within a couple of seasons, Wilder then achieved an even greater feat by accomplishing promotion with his beloved club. He was then able to enjoy a brilliant first season in the top flight before parting company.

The 55-year-old was most recently in charge of Watford for a short spell after having a mixed time of things at Middlesbrough previously. However, we might see him return to the helm at Bramall Lane.

Could Frank Lampard Be the Next Blades Boss?

Frank Lampard was seemingly out of his depth when taking charge of Chelsea, and things at Everton didn't work out particularly well. However, the former England midfielder might be interested in the chance to return to Premier League management.

The 45-year-old might still be hungry to enjoy a successful career and he has experience of a battle against relegation when keeping Everton afloat two seasons ago. However, he did continue to struggle in charge of the Toffees last term and was given his marching orders to be replaced by Sean Dyche last season. He then had a disastrous spell as caretaker boss back at Chelsea following Graham Potter's sacking.

Would Neil Warnock Return to Bramall Lane?

Neil Warnock is a stickler for football management, and it's not completely out of the question that we see the vastly experienced manager take charge at Bramall Lane this season. While the 74-year-old has just stood aside at Championship team Huddersfield Town, it could be that he finds it hard to resist the lure of Sheffield United, a team where he was manager for a decade between 1997-2007.

This is a club with which he has a rich history, and that includes steering them to an FA Cup and League Cup semi-final, with United also achieving promotion to the Premier League in 2006. Perhaps Warnock can be hired on a short-term basis with some kind of rescue package in mind, with fans sure to give him a massive reception if he was to return.

Would Graham Potter Consider Blades Role?

We've heard little of Graham Potter since he left Chelsea earlier in 2023, with the former Swansea and Brighton boss having struggled at Stamford Bridge although he was the recipient of a hefty pay-off after previously making the switch from the AMEX Stadium.

Potter might well be looking for his next project ,and he's among the initial favourites with new betting sites to replace Paul Heckingbottom at Bramall Lane. However, it's far from an attractive proposition to take charge of a team who seem absolutely doomed for relegation already.

Having been involved with Brighton and Chelsea teams with far greater ambitions, it might take a lot for Sheffield United to secure the services of Potter.
