Who's in the Premier League Title Race?

Before the season kicks off, the market's really only pointing to five sides worth taking seriously. Here's where each of them stands as things get underway.

Arsenal

Arsenal spent three seasons as Manchester City and Liverpool’s closest challenger before finally getting the job done last year, and there's no reason to think one title will satisfy this squad. Mikel Arteta has built a side around a defence that conceded fewer goals than anyone else in the league, and continuity is on their side heading into the new campaign. Manchester City

City's four consecutive titles between 2020/21 and 2023/24 set the Premier League record, so writing them off entirely feels premature even with Pep Guardiola departed. Enzo Maresca inherits a squad still stacked with quality, and the early questions will be less about talent and more about how quickly a new voice in the dressing room can find its rhythm. Liverpool's title-winning form under Arne Slot faded badly last season, and there's real pressure on the Reds and new manager Andoni Iraola to show last year was a blip rather than the start of a decline. Replacing Mohamed Salah will be a tall task even if he seemed a fading talent at times.

Chelsea

Chelsea come into the season under Xabi Alonso, and the market has taken notice, shortening from 10/1 to 8/1 at most football betting sites in the past couple of weeks alone. United remain the most decorated club in Premier League history, and there's always a temptation to back a big name to bounce back, but this looks more like a season to stabilise than to seriously chase the title.

Carrick knows the club inside out from his playing days, which counts for something during a period of transition, but patience will be needed if the early results don't immediately match the ambition. A second consecutive top-four finish would already represent a solid season for the Red Devils.
